Emeralds, Eagles win BR-H invite
HARRIS — Winning 3-of-4 relays helped Manistique’s cause here Monday as it captured the boys’ title in the Bark River-Harris Invitational with 107 points.
Munising was runner-up with 91 and BR-H edged Rapid River 82-78 for third place.
The Stephenson girls won with 104 points. Manistique and BR-H tied for second at 95 and Big Bay de Noc took fourth with 68 despite low numbers.
Manistique senior Ben Gilroy, who anchored the 1600 and 3200-meter relays, added a first in the 400 at 53.11 seconds and placed third in the 800 (2:17.23) on this sunny and very warm afternoon.
The Emeralds were clocked at 1:40.35 in the 800 relay, 3:47.67 in the 1600 and 9:05.28 in the 3200.
Sophomore Sam Moose provided the Emeralds with a first in shot put with a personal-best toss of 43-7.
BR-H sophomore Gionni McDonough copped the 110 hurdles (16.69) and 300s (45.35) and helped the Broncos win the 400 relay at 48.1 seconds and take second in the 800 (1:40.42).
“Everything went pretty good, especially in the relays,” he said. “Two of our regular guys were out, but we had a couple guys step up and they did a nice job. I think our team is doing pretty well. I thought I did well in the 110 hurdles and okay in the 300s. It was hot out there. I didn’t have much chance to get in the shade because my races were pretty close together.”
Senior Justin Bergquist, also part of the winning 400 relay, added a first in the 200 (24.68) and was runner-up (11.93) by .09 second to Munising junior Dylan Adkinson in the 100.
Hannahville overcame adversity in the 400 relay by taking second in a school-record 48.3.
“It’s all about attitude,” Hannahville assistant coach Jeff Paupore said. “We had to revamp our relays about an hour before the meet because one guy quit the team and another didn’t show up, but you have to keep going. The attitude is good among the guys who are still running and they did a pretty good job. We got four school records today.”
Holy Name junior Michael Rexford captured long jump at 19-3, less than a week after jumping a personal-best 20-7 at Stephenson.
“My distance is down from last week,” he said. “I struggled with my steps today, but overall I can still see myself progressing. The warm weather helps 100 percent. Your legs get tight in the cold if you don’t move around enough.”
Munising senior Dan Goss won the 1600 (4:41.03) and 3200 (11:14.01). Classmate Trevor Nolan, a Bay College basketball recruit, took the 800 (2:09.19) and was runner-up in the 1600 (4:43.14) and 3200 (11:33.53).
BR-H sophomore Ben Knauf placed third in the 1600 (4:44.46) and senior brother Weston was third in the 3200 (11:42.72).
Rock Mid Peninsula got a first from freshman Lewis Holmes in high jump at 5-10.
For the girls, Stephenson junior Faith Cappaert won the 400 in a school-record 1:00.29, was runner-up in the 800 (2:43.24) and helped the Eagles take the 3200 relay.
Freshman Nora Parker, also part of that relay, won the 800 (2:41:45).
Stephenson senior Alayna Strahl swept the weight events, taking shot put (31-7) and discus (98-5), with Mid Pen junior Hope Brunngraeber placing second in shot (31-4 ½) and disc (87-0).
“It’s exciting to have Faith back,” Eagles’ coach Kate Kuntz said. “She was in Florida for the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference where Stephenson took first. Not only did she come back as a national champion, but won the 400 in school-record time. This is a big confidence boost for her. Our group left May 5, but Faith didn’t want to miss our invitational and flew out after the meet (to Orlando, Fla.). That just tells you how much she loves track.
“We weren’t quite in full force, but it’s always nice to get the win. We revamped our relays and we’re really happy with the way the other girls filled in.”
Big Bay de Noc freshman Destiny Bleau captured the 100 (13.1) and 200 (26.52) with Manistique senior Leah Goudreau runner-up in the 100 (13.45) and 200 (13.45).
“Destiny is really good,” Goudreau said. “It looks effortless when she runs. It’s completely natural. This was kind of a pre-run for the regional. We’re going with a little different lineup and light load to save everything for the regional (Division 1 at Escanaba Friday). We’re gaining a little momentum as a team, for sure. It’s 82 degrees over here today. We’re not used to that yet. We’ve gotten used to the rain and cold.”
Goudreau took first in long jump at 14-11.
Big Bay junior Carragan Thill took high jump (5-0) and Bleau was third (4-10).
“My starts went pretty well,” Bleau said. “My PR in the 100 is 12.99. It went pretty good today, but hope I can get a PR in the regional. I just have to keep practicing. I had an off day in high jump, although I’m happy for Carragan. She jumped really well.”
The Black Bears also got a pair of firsts from eighth-grader Evonna LaCosse, who copped the 1600 (6:05.6) and 3200 in a personal-best 13:31.18.
BR-H senior Hope Varoni kept the 1600 close, placing second at 6:06.74.
Sophomore Emma Zawada provided the Broncos with a first in the 300 hurdles (50.62), followed by Munising freshman Addie Bowerman (51.81) and senior Dayne Behning (52.68).
Zawada also helped the Broncos win the 400 relay, take second in the 800 and third in the 1600.
Senior Emma Sundling continued to be Rapid River’s leader, taking second in the 200 (27.9) and 400 (1:02.93).
“I had a good start and tied my PR in the 400,” she said. “I’m happy with that. I tried to stay with her (Cappaert. It’s very warm out here. I’ve been trying to stay in the shade and stay hydrated. It was tough.”
The Rockets host the Division 3 regional today at 2 p.m.
