Sports flashback March 2-8

March 3, 2000 — Joe Gartland scored twice, leading the Escanaba Eskymos to a 5-2 hockey triumph over the Kingsford Flivvers in a Division 1 regional opener. Mike Seppanen, Jason Nelson and Jeremy Murray also scored and Matt Hampton had 15 saves for the Eskymos, who recorded only their third playoff victory in the program’s 16-year history. Esky also set a school-record in the most victories in a single season while improving to 14-10-1.

March 4, 2000 — The Rapid River Rockets were crowned Class D district volleyball champions after defeating the Grand Marais Polar Bears 15-3, 15-8. Melissa Anderson served for 27 points and Stephanie Boyer hit the match-winner for the Rockets who were among the first to take a district title in the first year of statewide competition. Sharon McLaughlin recorded 21 kills. Shannon Boyer added 10 kills and 14 assists. Molly Bacon collected 18 assists. Jenelle Gray tallied five kills and Michelle Dennis had four.

March 6, 2000 — The Escanaba gymnasts edged Menominee 114.1-113.65 for their first Upper Peninsula title in seven years. They were followed by Marquette 111.9, Gladstone 107.5 and Negaunee 100.1.

Esky’s Nina Schubert set U.P. records in all-around (34.95) and uneven bars (9.05) and won balance beam (8.7) and shared the title with Menominee’s Laura Barker in floor exercise (8.75). Gladstone’s Sarah Ducheny was runner-up on vault (8.3) and placed third on floor (7.8).

March 7, 2000 — Escanaba’s basketball season ended unexpectedly in a 55-52 loss to Marquette in a Class A district opener. Jeremy Nastoff and Spike Houle led the Eskymos with 13 points each and Bob Skerbeck added 10. Andy Hayes scored 20 for Marquette.

March 8, 2000 — Gladstone’s season also drew to a close in a 65-54 loss to Kingsford in a Class B opener. Russ Sargent and Bill Roman led the Braves with 11 points apiece. Pat Casey had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Flivvers.

Dave Kaiser hit a career-high 15 points, leading the Manistique Emeralds in a 66-20 rout of Rudyard in a Class C opener. Dave Winkel added 14 and Dan Giles scored 11. Matt McDonott scored 10 for the Bulldogs.

Ryan Knoph’s 24 points were enough to lead the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears past the Superior Central Cougars in a Class D opener. Brandon Fox added 20 points and nine rebounds and Jake Denkins finished with 18 points, nine assists and nine boards. Nick Jacques paced the Cougars with 17 points and Jeff Papineau had 16.

March 4, 2005 — Justin Bloniarz scored 20 points, leading the Bark River-Harris Broncos past the Powers North Central Jets 58-43 in a Class D district basketball final. Jake Kleiman added 14 and Derek Gagne paced the Jets with 18.

Nick Mills scored in overtime as the Negaunee Miners handed Esky a 3-2 hockey loss in a Division 1 regional opener. Craig Lancour hit both goals and Jared Nordin stopped 15 shots for the Eskymos

March 5, 2005 — Superior Central captured its first Class D district title in eight years in a 56-43 conquest of Big Bay de Noc. Jeremy Maki led the Cougars with 15 points. Justin Trobridge hit 14 and Ben Waring had 10. Jeremiah Roberts scored nine for the Black Bears.

March 7, 2005 — Bark River-Harris made its first appearance in a Class D volleyball regional where it dropped a 3-1 (25-16, 28-30, 25-19, 25-23) decision to Crystal Falls Forest Park in the title match. The Broncos reached the title round by eliminating the Engadine Eagles in five sets. Jaime VanEnkevort provided the Broncos with 33 kills, five blocks and four service aces and Amanda Palmgren added 38 kills and three aces in the tournament.
