Sports flashback Jan. 26-Feb. 1
Jan. 27, 1990 — Tom Venne and Tim Martineau scored in the final 2:12 as the Escanaba Eskymos skated to their first-ever hockey victory over the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils 6-5. Martineau scored twice against the reigning Class B-C-D state champs. Cory Kositzky, Justin Gluesing and Scott Sliva also hit goals for the Eskymos.
Dave Elliott and Scott Creten sank two free throws apiece in the closing moments as the Gladstone Braves defeated the West Iron County Wykons 50-46. Elliott scored 17 points and Creten finished with 13.
John Barnes tossed in 31 points as Esky topped Menominee 72-57. Brian Robinette scored 15 points and Paul Brunelle had 12.
Esky earned top honors in its own invitational volleyball tournament with a 15-10, 15-12 triumph over the St. Ignace Saints. Jessica Bastien hit 28 service points to go with eight blocks. Judi Skradski added 23 points and Jenny Lofquist recorded 28 kills.
Jan. 31, 1990 — The Rock Mid Peninsula Wolverines overcame a slow start in a 79-37 conquest of Big Bay de Noc. Phil Croasdell and Jason Lippens led the Wolverines with 13 points each.
Don Thiry and Justin Hoeffler scored 21 points apiece as the Carney-Nadeau Wolves defeated the Rapid River Rockets 85-74. Gary Kidd paced the Rockets with 24 points and six assists. Dave Lundquist added 16 points and nine rebounds.
Jan. 26, 1995 — Manistique senior Cass Peacock set the school record in 50-yard freestyle in 28.28 seconds in the Mid-Peninsula Conference girls’ swimming and diving meet, shaving .02 second off the previous best by Jennifer Yirsa a year ago.
Peacock provided the Emeralds with their lone first-place finish in 100 butterfly at 1:15.69.
Ishpeming-Negaunee was crowned team champion with 108 points, followed by Ishpeming Westwood 80, Gwinn 60 and Manistique 57.
Beau Miller, a sophomore from Escanaba, scored 11 straight points at crunch time, leading the Wisconsin-Marinette men past UW-Fox Valley 81-79 in college basketball. Beau Miller finished with 30 points. His brother Kip Miller hit 17 and Sid Lucas, a freshman from Big Bay de Noc, added 13 for the Buccaneers.
Jan. 27, 1995 — Kelly Blackstone served for 11 points, including three aces, helping the Escanaba Eskymos post a 15-9, 15-7 volleyball triumph over the Stephenson Eagles. Amy Klein hit five points, including an ace, to go with four kills. Amber Groleau recorded seven kills. Kristen Olson collected 38 assists and Blackstone added 16.
Gladstone’s Maria Chouinard top the all-around standings in all-around with 25.85 points, helping the Gladstone gymnasts defeat Negaunee 76.1-74.8. Chouinard won balance beam at 7.2 and shared second place with teammate Jen Sweeney in floor exercise. Her sister, Angela Chouniard, tied for first on balance beam with Negaunee’s Shauna Lein (6.75).
Elly Suomis scored a personal-best 7.15 on beam and Lisa Rantala and Jen Collins placed third in vault and floor, respectively.
Jan. 28, 1995 — Jeremy Peacock scored 27 points as the Gladstone Braves hung on for a 78-75 victory over the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears in their first-ever basketball meeting. John Roman added 13 points and Mitch Cole had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Bruce Spaulding led the Black Bears with a career-high 29 points and 13 boards. Colin Pomeroy tossed in 16 points and Eric Ranguette had 10.
