Bronco ladies knock off Rockets
RAPID RIVER — Everybody got a chance to play while the Bark River-Harris girls coasted to a 59-20 basketball triumph over the Rapid River Rockets here Friday night.
Rapid River stayed close into the second quarter of this Skyline Central Conference Large Division contest when the Broncos began to break it open.
This was the second straight victory for BR-H, which fell 65-27 at Marquette Tuesday, but bounced back with a 50-48 triumph at Felch North Dickinson Thursday.
“This has been a long week,” BR-H coach Paige Welch said. “It was good for us to play a game like that (at Marquette) as long as we get better. We were hungry for a win. North Dickinson has a good team. I think winning up there gave us some momentum.”
The score was tied at nine apiece late in the opening frame when Rapid River senior forward Aubrey Olson sank a pair of free throws.
BR-H responded with 17 unanswered points, surging to a 26-9 advantage on a steal and layup by junior Julia Nault with 1:44 left in the second stanza.
After Olson split a pair of free throws, the Broncos answered with a 9-0 run for a 35-10 cushion early in the third.
The Rockets trailed 38-16 after Olson drained a 20-foot jump shot from the right wing midway through the third.
BR-H then outscored Rapid River 16-2 through the remainder of the third prior to gaining a 54-18 advantage on a lay-in by senior Danica Peterson.
“We got to play everybody, which is good,” Welch said. “This gave the girls a little more experience and helped them get a little more comfortable. They needed some work.”
Olson began the scoring with a layup off the opening tip and gave the Rockets a 7-5 lead on a 12-foot floater with 2:35 left in the first.
The Broncos went ahead for the first time at 1:45 when senior Emma Zawada sneaked through the backdoor for a layup for a 9-7 lead.
Rapid River committed 32 turnovers and BR-H had nine.
“We hit a third-quarter slump which has been an ongoing issue,” Rockets’ coach Holly Frisk said. “The girls need to understand they have to play hard from beginning to end. It was close in the first quarter. I think they were building off last night’s game (in Thursday’s 69-20 loss at Carney-Nadeau), but we tend to run out of steam which I think is a mental thing. The girls are conditioned. Bark River-Harris is one of the faster teams we play all year. We’re not used to seeing that.”
Zawada led the Broncos with 18 points and Olson paced the Rockets with 13.
