HANNAHVILLE — Hannahville senior Jayden Sagataw fired from the corner for 3 with 5:32 remaining in the first quarter against Mackinac Island on Friday night.

Sagataw connected, and the Soaring Eagles led 8-5 as Lakers’ head coach Dusty Coleman called a timeout. In that moment the Hannahville faithful, who packed nearly every inch of the eight rows of bleachers on this night went ballistic.

Why did Soaring Eagles fans go crazy over an 8-5 lead? Well, Sagataw’s 3-pointer wasn’t any ordinary corner 3.

See, the corner 3 was his 1,000th career point.

“It’s probably my number one (moment),” Sagataw said. “It’s been one of my goals since freshman year.”

The game was paused to announce Sagataw’s historic achievement. He saluted the home crowd as they cheered, applauded and did everything to show their support.

“I’m pretty excited for him, pretty excited for the community,” Hannahville coach Jon Bintner said. “It’s a pretty awesome environment for him and the kids.”

The Soaring Eagles ultimately knocked off the Lakers 87-35. Sagataw finished with 26 points, seven assists, two steals and a rebound.

After the game came a photo opportunity session with teammates, coaches, family and community members who came out for the occasion.

“It’s a big thing for the community,” Sagataw said. “Just proud to be part of it.”

Sagataw became the second Hannahville basketball player to reach the 1,000 point threshold. Dashawn Metzger achieved the milestone last season. He, along with Sagataw, are seniors on this year’s team and were members of the 2021-22 team which went a perfect 12-0 in the Northern Lights League, winning the regular season and tournament titles.

Having one 1,000 point scorer is a big deal for a program. Having multiple throughout a program’s history is another thing.

But what’s the proper way to sum up having not one, but two 1,000 point scorers on the same team?

“I can’t even put into words how much a 1,000 point scorer means, especially if it’s the first one and the second one, in the history of the school,” Bintner explained. “I mean, we’re talking major, major accomplishments for those boys. All the fans, everybody in the community are coming out and supporting them. It’s just awesome to see.”
