Bay hoops earns weekend sweep over Delta College

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. –Another weekend, another pair of wins for Bay College basketball.

The Norse made the trip to the greater Saginaw area for a womens/mens basketball doubleheader on Saturday. Here’s what went down:

Womens’ hoops

Norse 87, Pioneers 46

Bay (10-8, 3-1 MJCAA) never trailed Delta, opening the game on an 12-2 run before taking a 29-14 lead after the first quarter which ballooned into a 52-21 lead at the half.

Bay freshman and Menominee graduate Anna Axtell led all players with 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting to go with eight rebounds. Baraga graduate and Bay Freshman Makenna Hendrickson added 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Freshman Lauren Zawada, a Bark River-Harris graduate, also added 16 points while adding six boards and four steals.

Canada’s own Kennedy Sproule accumulated a game-best 12 rebounds to go with eight points and five blocks. McKenzie Hoffmeyer, a Bark River-Harris graduate, added 10 points off the bench. Anisa Longs added 11 points off the bench.

Hailee Jefferson led the Pioneers with 10 points and 10 boards, good enough for a double-double.

Bay out rebounded Delta 51-40. The Norse finished 32-of-83 from the floor, 4-of-17 from 3-point range and 19-of-23 from the free throw line. The Pioneers were contained to 19-of-64 (29.7%) shooting from the floor, 2-of-12 (16.7%) from 3-point range and 6-of-13 (46.2%) from the free throw line.

Bay forced 26 turnovers which turned into 28 points. Delta forced eight turnovers which turned into four points.

Mens’ hoops

Norse 118, Pioneers 96

Saturday’s finale saw Bay (14-4, 3-1) trail early on. However, it trailed for a total of 30 seconds before sophomore Nic Williams buried a 3-pointer for a 3-2 lead. The Norse never trailed after that.

Williams finished with a team-best 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting while finishing 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Sophomores Ryan Sweeney and Joe Ofori added 19 and 15 points respectively with the latter hauling in nine rebounds. Mykel Lindsey added 14 points and Josh Williams knocked down 13 points. Freshman Connor Coduti, also a Menominee graduate, added 16 points off the bench. Every Norse player that was dressed on Saturday played.

The Norse shot 54.5% from the floor and 48.3% from 3-point range, won the rebounding battle 38-29 and committed seven turnovers while forcing 12.
