Sports flashback Dec. 1-7
Dec. 1, 1984 — The Rapid River girls outlasted Rock Mid Peninsula 50-47 in a Class D district basketball final. Kelly Vietzke, who sealed the verdict with a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining in overtime, led the Rockets with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Kristin Depuydt paced the Wolverines with 22 points. Mid Pen’s Jodie Weeks and Jeanne Plummer grabbed 11 boards each.
Dec. 3, 1984 — The Escanaba Eskymos enjoyed a successful hockey debut in a 7-4 triumph over Fond du Lac, Wis. Jim Aird and Loren Stenfors collected three goals and two assists apiece. Ray LaMarche scored the remaining goal.
Dec. 6, 1984 — Rapid River advanced in the Class D regional tournament with a 49-34 opening-round victory over Lake Linden-Hubbell. Cheryl Bird scored 17 points and Jami Tredeau added 15 for the Rockets. Vietzke finished with 11.
Dec. 7, 1984 — Manistique’s basketball season ended in a 44-33 loss to Ishpeming Westwood in a Class C regional opener. Nancy Krusic scored 10 points while becoming the school’s all-time career scoring leader. Cathy Paquin added nine points and 10 rebounds.
Rob Searle, Kim Pepin and Ken Curtis won the final three matches as the Gladstone wrestlers rallied past the Kingsford Flivvers 34-27. Searle recorded a pin at 185 pounds. Pepin earned a 10-8 victory over Scott Lindbloom in the 198 match and Curtis pinned Joe Haase in the heavyweight bout.
Dec. 2, 1989 — Tim Martineau scored in overtime, lifting Esky to a 6-5 overtime hockey victory over the Houghton Gremlins. Martineau, Tom Hampton and Tom Venne netted two goals apiece and Paul Jensen stopped 38 shots.
Dec. 4, 1989 — The Carney-Nadeau girls captured their first Class D state basketball title in a 73-59 triumph over Potterville.
“Last year we came down here and that was good enough,” coach Paul Polfus said. “We came back and played at the same time and in the same gym. There’s no substitute for that experience.”
Connie Berger hit four 3-points shots among her 22 points. Michelle Charlier and Jill Wetthuhn scored 17 each and Joy Donaldson had 10 for the Wolves, who finished 28-0. Gina Harrington collected 33 points and 14 rebounds for Potterville.
Buck Nelson scored 26 points, leading the Mead Oldtimers to a 55-42 upset victory over the Bark River Merchants. Jim Leonards led the Merchants with 10.
Dec. 6, 1989 — The Rock Mid Peninsula boys scored four in double digits, but it was enough to keep them from dropping a season-opening basketball decision to the Republic-Michigamme Hawks. Jason Lippens led the Wolverines with 15 points. Scott Johnson added 14. Phil Croasdell hit 13 and John Gudwer tallied 10. Erik Racine pumped in 19 and Mark Cameron had 17 for the Hawks.
