GLADSTONE — Three double-digit scorers led Gladstone girls basketball to a 51-38 victory over Westwood here Thursday.

Gladstone junior Lillie Johnson had a good night even battling illness finished with 19 points 10 rebounds three assists and a block. Johnson hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter to give the Braves a 13-6 lead.

“Those three’s gave us some energy and a boost that we needed,” Johnson said. “Our team chemistry is good, everybody stepped up and hit shots and we fed off the team bonding that we do and it carries over to the games.”

Johnson hit a nice mid-range jumper early in the second quarter to extend the lead to 24-12 and followed it up with her third 3-pointer of the night and the Braves led 27-13.

In the fourth quarter Johnson found Addy Blowers on a nice bounce pass for the layup, one of three assists to put the Braves up 46-33. Moments later, Johnson hit again from downtown to extend the lead to 49-33. “We rely on Lillie for almost everything,” Braves coach Andy Cretens said. “She is coming off a 25 point 20 rebound night against Ishpeming but is battling a sickness which is why rebound numbers are down as she is getting 15 to 20 on a nightly basis.”

Senior Mayce Hanson had a good night for the Braves. She posted 12 points on the night. Hanson knocked down the first shot of the game. Then late in the first quarter drove hard to the basket making the shot and drawing the foul, Hanson converted the three-point play and the Braves led 19-10.

Hanson added seven points in the second half including a 3-pointer that gave the Braves a 44-33 lead in the fourth.

Junior Addy Blowers was the third scorer in double figures for the Braves, knocking down a pair of three in the first half to finish with 10 points.

The Braves forced 29 Westwood turnovers but committed 17 of their own. The Braves struggled at the free throw line going 8-17.

“We need to put in more time working on free throws,” Cretens said. “We have the right people getting to the line, we just have to make them when we get there.”

The Braves return to action Tuesday as they travel to Kingsford.
