Sports flashback Nov. 3-9
Nov. 3, 1994 — Tracy Hudson scored 23 points, leading Pub-n-Grub to a 72-56 victory over Engineered Machine Products in the Escanaba Men’s Basketball League. Paul Cole added 22 and Kirk Schwalbach tallied 10. Karl Dollhopf paced EMP with 23 and Paul Lundberg had 10.
Nov. 4, 1994 — Jenny Folcik set the school-record scoring record as the Bark River-Harris girls gained at least a share of the Central U.P. Conference title in a 70-52 triumph over the Carney-Nadeau Wolves. Folcik hit 28 points while running her career total to 1,187. Clarissa Charlier led the Wolves with 13 and Amy Baumler had 10.
Rock Mid Peninsula kept pace in a 60-31 conquest of Big Bay de Noc. Janine LaChance hit 13 points for the Wolverines. Jill Gobert also had 13 points to go with 19 rebounds. Carolyn Servant chipped in with 12. Lisa Farley led the Black Bears with eight.
Nov. 7, 1994 — The football season ended for BR-H in a 33-6 loss to the Manton Rangers in a Class DD district playoff opener. The Broncos’ lone touchdown took place on Ken Kwarcinay’s five-yard pass to Jeff Ives, who rushed for 67 yards on 15 carries. Craig Jensen added 64 in 13 attempts.
Nov. 9, 1994 — Brianne Weber hit 15 points as the Gladstone Braves defeated the Kingsford Flivvers 59-37. Renee Carlson scored 14 and Nikki Sealander had 10.
Sarah Bruce drained a 22-foot jump shot at the final buzzer as the Gwinn Modeltowners handed the Escanaba Eskymos a 53-50 loss. Stephanie Mattson led the Eskymos with 12 points. Elaine Mott had 10.
Nov. 3, 2004 — Carly Benson scored 27 points to go with eight steals and five assists, leading the Carney-Nadeau Wolves to a 60-17 girls’ basketball victory over the Stephenson Eagles. Ashley Folcik added 20 points.
Powers North Central scored four in double digits in a 55-44 conquest of North Dickinson. Crystal Miller led the Jets with 15 points. Megan Chartier and Shelle Rochon had 12 each and Nicole Mileski tallied 11.
Nov. 5, 2004 — Nikki Bontakoe hit a free throw with 26 seconds left to play as the Manistique Emeralds then hung on to defeat the Rudyard Bulldogs 44-43. Laura Hoholik led the Emeralds with 18 points and 20 rebounds. Emily Zellar contributed 11 points and 10 boards and Bontakoe collected six assists.
Nov. 6, 2004 — The football season ended for Manistique in a 20-8 loss to the Newberry Indians in a Division 7 district final. Ben Varoni ran 26 times for 102 yards, including a one-yard touchdown. Jake Pann led the Indians by rushing for 175 yards and three TDs on 29 carries.
Rock Mid Peninsula also lost, falling to the Posen Vikings 42-14 in a D-8 district final. Caleb Hayes ran for a six-yard TD and caught a 44-yard pass from Carl Branstrom for another score. Posen’s Matt Ponik rushed for 211 yards and three TDs and Richie Kroll had 149 yards rushing and a TD.
Mallery Fisher scored 14 points, leading the Escanaba girls to a 56-38 basketball triumph over the Petoskey Northmen. Jenna Guay added 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Nov. 8, 2004 — The Gladstone Braves earned a D-5 district grid title by edging Mason County Central 27-25. Ron Jacques threw an 81-yard bomb to Matt Petr, who also scored on a 46-yard run. Cevin Cosby added four and 38-yard TD runs.
Grand Valley State University edged Northern Michigan 27-31 for the Great Lakes Division II Regional cross country title. Menominee graduate Mandi (Long) Zemba was Grand Valley’s leader in second place, covering the 3.1-mile course in 22:05.28 and Esky grad Kari O’Dell placed fifth at 22:32.84. Stephanie Howe was NMU’s pacesetter in third (22:09.51).
