Sports flashback Nov. 24-30
Nov. 26, 1979 — The Escanaba Eskymos reached the Class A state football finals at the Pontiac Silverdome where they dropped a 32-7 decision to Detroit Catholic Center. Ron Gerstner scored Esky’s lone touchdown on a five-yard run.
Coach Jerry Cvengros said the Eskymos were in awe of the 80,000-seat stadium.
“It seems that no matter what we did, the coaches and players were nervous,” he added.
Ishpeming blanked Watervliet 13-0 in the Class C final and Norway claimed the Class D title with a 21-6 triumph over Schoolcraft.
Nov. 27, 1984 — The basketball season ended for the Gladstone girls in a 47-35 loss to the Menominee Maroons in a Class B district opener. Tori Knispel led Menominee with 19 points. Dawn Farrell paced the Braves with 11 and Sue Groves added 10.
The Bark River-Harris Broncos won their Class D opener in a 63-50 conquest of Eben. Jeanne Getzloff paced the Broncos with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Clara Oswald added 19 points and 11 boards and Sherri Lindquist grabbed 12 boards. Maurisa Ostanek hit 18 points for the Eagles and Kelly Redmer had 12 rebounds.
Nov. 28, 1984 — Tammy Funke tallied 19 points to go with 20 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Escanaba Eskymos from dropping a 66-58 decision at Marquette in a Class A opener. Kelly Rivard added 10 points. Diane Larson poured in 26 for Marquette and Karen Nevala had 17.
Amy Hastings collected 20 points and 10 boards as the Manistique Emeralds hung on for a 37-35 triumph over the Newberry Indians in a Class C opener. Laura Shifflet led Newberry with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Carney-Nadeau earned a 42-32 triumph over Powers North Central in a Class D opener, ending the Jets’ six-year reign as district champions. Carolyn Blahnik led the Wolves with 15 points. Faye Granquist was North Central’s leader with 15.
Nov. 24, 1989 — The Big Bay de Noc girls captured the Class D regional basketball championship by defeating the Hillman Tigers 65-44. Jennifer Thill led the way with 25 points. Heather Peterson collected 12 points and 13 rebounds and Sara Lang had 11 points and 12 boards.
Nov. 25, 1989 — Escanaba’s Nick Bink and Scott Odgers were selected to the Association Press Class A all-state football team. Nick, this year’s Upper Peninsula Offensive Player of the Year, rushed for 824 yards on 91 carries and hit 35-of-76 passes for 570 yards and six touchdowns. Scott Odgers, the U.P. Defensive Player of the Year, was also named all-state and Justin Gluesing received honorable mention for the Eskymos, who went 9-0 in the regular season before bowing to Muskegon 23-0 in the opening round of the state playoffs.
Nov. 29, 1989 — Carney-Nadeau’s Jill Wetthuhn was named to the AP Class D all-state girls’ basketball team. Wetthuhn averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds a game for the Wolves, who won 64 consecutive regular season games.
Nov. 30, 1989 — Michelle Charlier scored 30 points and Wetthuhn added 25 as Wolves rolled past Big Bay 82-39 in a Class D state quarterfinal game. Connie Berger hit 10 for C-N and Lang had 17 for the Black Bears.
