Sports flashback Nov. 17-23
Nov. 18, 1964 — The Cooks Clippers came up a little short in a 64-57 season-opening basketball loss to the Engadine Eagles. Phil Hartman led the Clippers with 23 points. Jim Zibart scored 16 for the Eagles.
Nov. 19, 1964 — Barry Rochefort scored 23 points, leading the Garden Jets in a 90-51 rout of Nahma. Joe Jacques added 15. Terry Larscheid hit 23 for the Arrows. Don Johnson had 19 in Seb Rubick’s coaching debut.
Nov. 21, 1964 — Frank Trotter’s 27 points was enough to lead the Holy Name Crusaders past the Escanaba Eskymos 72-64. Jim Micheau scored 20 and Walter Veldman chipped in with 10. Dick Sivertsen paced Esky with 13 and Jerry Hanson had 12.
Lynn LaPlant tossed in 19 points, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Gladstone Braves from dropping an 85-66 decision to the Negaunee Miners. Bruce Hawkinson added 15 and Rick Ebbesen had 13.
Steve Pipkorn scored with five seconds left in the second overtime, lifting the Powers-Spalding Tigers past the Rapid River Rockets 68-66. Pipkorn, Mike Nelson and Bill Hawrylow scored 15 points apiece for the Tigers. Doug Moss paced the Rockets with 28.
Cliff Perras poured in 26 points, leading the Carney-Nadeau Wolves past the Alpha Mastodons to a 62-59 in overtime. Bob Macco hit 18.
Nov. 18, 1969 — Ken Simonsen collected 24 points and 20 rebounds, leading the Perkins Yellowjackets to a 64-40 season-opening basketball victory over the Grand Marais Polar Bears. Bob VanDamme added 17 points and 22 boards. Dwayne Couillard scored 12 points.
Nov. 19, 1969 — Chuck Larsen hit 27 points as the Rapid River Rockets outlasted the DeTour Red Raiders 91-86. Dale Morin pumped in 24. Sam Johnson tallied 15 and Dale Pasi had 13. Tom Newell led DeTour with 40 points and 21 rebounds.
Nov. 22, 1969 — Tom Kangas scored 23 points, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Escanaba Eskymos from dropping a 94-80 decision to Marquette. Bob Gauthier tossed in 19 and Mike Cousineau added 14.
The Bay de Noc Community College Norseman opened their season with in a 95-60 rout of Wisconsin-Marinette. Steve Fisher and Mark Weber led the way with 16 points each. Mike Sigfrids and Steve Miketinac added 12 apiece.
Dave Mickelson collected 20 points as the Manistique Emeralds defeated the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils 58-48. Gary Weber scored 18.
The Bark River-Harris Broncos made their season debut a successful one in a 61-56 triumph over the Hermansville Redskins. Alex Jorasz scored 15 points and Loren Veeser hit 14 for the Broncos. John Dani had 23 for the Redskins.
