Oct. 17, 1964 — The Manistique Emeralds moved a step closer to a possible Great Lakes Conference championship with a 13-0 football victory over Marquette. Rod Weber scored on a two-yard run in the first quarter and Doug Nelson added a 62-yard touchdown dash in the third.
Oct. 19, 1964 — Mike Gafner tossed a 19-yard TD pass to Carl Olson and Jim Hansen provided the extra points with 67 seconds left to play, lifting the Escanaba Eskymos past the Iron Mountain Mountaineers 7-6. Jim Clairmont rushed for 106 yards on 24 carries. Bill Boyce stopped an Iron Mountain drive by recovering a fumble by Jim Lindstrom on Esky’s 10-yard line late in the third stanza.
The Gladstone Braves ran for 190 yards in a 34-13 conquest of Munising. Mike Gobert rushed for 47 yards and Bruce Hardwick added 42. Mark Goodman completed 4-of-5 passes for 118 yards and two TDs. Rick Ebbesen dashed 50 yards for a TD and Gobert added a 10-yard TD run and Hardwick scored from a yard out. Mustangs’ quarterback toss 30 and 60-yard TD aerials to Fran DesArmo.
The Green Bay Preble Hornets spoiled Holy Name’s homecoming by handing the Crusaders a 20-0 loss. Tom Meinz rushed 16 times for 52 yards and Frank Trotter intercepted a pass for Holy Name.
Oct. 13, 1969 — Bob Gauthier tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Rick Brookes in the final 22 seconds, lifting Esky past Marinette 7-6. Esky’s Doug Howard ran 10 times for 78 yards.
Keith Demeuse scored twice, leading the Gladstone Braves past the Negaunee Miners 36-0.
Demeuse caught a 29-yard TD pass from Cliff Young and returned an interception 35 yards for another score. Gary Young added a three-yard TD run. Pat Cole scored from a yard out and John Skellenger added a one-yard TD plunge.
The Bark River-Harris Broncos completed a perfect season in a 50-20 conquest of Pembine, Wis. Len Olson and Tom Shiverski scored three TDs apiece. Olson collected 111 yards on the ground on 18 carries and Dan Veeser had 92 in 10 attempts. Russ Pirlot was 13-of-29 passing for 303 yards. The Broncos, who finished 6-0, outscored their opponents 254-54.
Powers-Spalding finished 3-3 following a 57-6 rout of Rock. Lee Vincent scored on 60 and one-yard runs and threw TD passes of 60 and 15 yards to Dick Smith. Vincent caught a 10-yard TD pass from Smith. Jim Gaber had a 10-yard TD run and Smith dashed 75 yards for another score.
Oct. 14, 1969 — Esky placed four runners among the top five in a 25-32 cross country victory over the Marinette Marines. Marinette’s Chuck Dettman won the 2.2-mile race in 11:10. He was followed by Esky’s Steve Gage, Fred Jurmu, Alan Larsen and Marty Anderson.
