North Central girls’ XC finishes third at Norway Invitational

NORWAY — The Powers North Central girls benefitted from a solid effort here Monday, placing third in the Norway Invitational cross country meet.

Ewen-Trout Creek took the title with 31 points, followed by Kingsford 46 and the Jets 55.

“This was a really good finish for us,” Jets’ coach Katie Depuydt said. “I think this gives us momentum going into the Skyline Central Conference meet. The teams which finished ahead of us aren’t in our conference.”

The Stephenson boys won with 34 points. They were followed by Menominee 46, Kingsford 62 and Rock Mid Peninsula 68.

E-TC freshman Brody Majurin earned top individual honors, covering the 3.1-mile course in 17:26.5.

“I ran solid for the first two miles to see what I had in the end,” he said. “It turned out that I had enough left. It was tough, but I got it done. I just had to stay with the lead group and passed them in the end. I think this gives me confidence going into the (Copper Mountain) conference meet.”

Stephenson junior Canon Kuntze took second at 17:35.4 and North Central senior Wes Knauf, who led for a short time, took third in a personal-best 17:39.2 on this sunny, mild and breezy afternoon.

“I enjoyed having the lead while I had it,” Knauf said. “I didn’t know anything about the kid from Ewen-Trout Creek. I hadn’t run against him before. He surprised me a little and Canon ran real well. We had solid competition. It was a good race on a flat course. I was able to use the downhills to my advantage. I was going to run with spikes, but there was a lot of asphalt on the course. When the wind picked up, it was kind of a challenge. This was a true PR (personal record). I can say with certainty that I can run a 17-minute 5-K. I’m looking forward to running in our home meet (Oct. 14).”

Kingsford freshman Maria Murvich became the girls’ champion at 20:32.6. She was followed by E-TC freshman Bree Besonen (21:20.9) and Stephenson junior Faith Cappaert (21:44.2).

“I wanted to run tough into the wind,” Murvich said. “It was a nice day for running. I felt good when I went out and that definitely set the tone. This gives me a lot of momentum going into the GNC (Great Northern Conference) meet.”

E-TC junior Emma Besonen placed fourth (21:56.8), followed by North Central senior Hope Varoni (22:08.2) and Mid Pen sophomore Aesara Lupinski (22:25.9).

“Hope had kind of a tough mid-season, but she ran well today,” Depuydt said. “Callie (Flagstadt) and Isabelle (Johnson) are coming along nicely. The girls are doing really well.”

Kingsford hosts the GNC meet at the Iron Mountain City Park Thursday. Stephenson hosts the SCC meet at Banat and E-TC travels to Ironwood for the CMC meet, also on Thursday.
