Emeralds fall at home to Negaunee

MANISTIQUE — The Manistique Emeralds were unable to avoid Negaunee’s lengthy service runs here Tuesday night, dropping a 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-18) volleyball decision to the Miners.

Senior Madison Perkul helped the No. 5 Miners seal the verdict by closing the Mid-Peninsula Conference match with a seven-point service run, including three consecutive aces.

“That was awesome,” Miners’ coach Krista Squires said. “She really served well. They are a strong program. Amy (coach Nixon) really built something here. We’re pleased to come out of here with a win.”

Manistique senior libero Kamry Flodin received recognition for her effort, setting school records for the most digs in a single match (47) and career (1,255), after the third set which appeared to inspire the Emeralds in the fourth.

“I did it for Grace,” Flodin said while shedding tears for her friend who died approximately 24 hours earlier. “It was all for Grace.”

The Emeralds took a 7-3 lead in the finale on a service ace by senior outside hitter Leah Goudreau.

Negaunee surged to an 8-7 lead following a hitting miscue by the Emeralds.

A little bit of miscommunication on defense by the Miners, however, enabled Manistique to tie the score at eight.

The fourth set stayed close for the most part as Manistique led for the last time at 18-17 following a kill by junior middle blocker Maya Carlson.

Manistique then got foiled on a hitting miscue, setting the stage for Perkul’s match-clinching run.

“When Kamry broke the record, it really inspired the girls,” Nixon said. “Kamry played great for her friend. In fact, all the girls did. They were able to stay close and their server was able to change things up and close the match by going on that big run.”

Manistique took a 10-7 lead on a Miners’ hitting error in the first set.

The Emeralds then committed a defensive error, enabling the Miners to gain a sideout.

A five-point run by senior Maddie Beaudry helped the Miners surge to a 13-10 lead.

Manistique trailed 16-15 after a two-hit violation, prior to taking an 18-16 lead on a Miners’ hitting miscue.

The score was tied at 18 following a passing error by Manistique before finishing the opener with a 7-1 run, with senior middle blocker Clara Cunningham securing that set with a kill.

In the second, Negaunee trailed 7-4 after a return error.

Perkul then provided the Miners with a kill and sideout followed by a five-point run for a 10-7 lead.

Manistique was still within 17-16 prior to committing a service error.

Perkul again served for five points, enabling the Miners to gain an insurmountable 23-16 advantage.

The third set was tied at eight before Negaunee gained an 11-8 lead on an Emeralds’ hitting error.

Manistique was within 12-10 before Gladwell recorded a kill and Perkul started a four-point run to put Negaunee up 17-10.

The Emeralds got within 17-13, but were unable to get any closer.

Goudreau provided the Emeralds with 14 kills and two blocks.

“Leah is our best offensive player,” Nixon said. “She can really pound the ball. We came ready to play and had a great game plan. We started the match by executing well. Our passing and hitting was good. I think we made errors at inopportune times which made it difficult for us to crawl back in.”

Perkul, who had no service errors, finished with five aces and five kills.

Gladwell led the Miners at the net with 10 kills. Anderson added nine and Mechling had eight. Rautiola collected 35 assists.

“They’re a solid defensive team,” Squires said. “Kamry had a lot of digs which is a testament to her. They were sending the ball over. It’s tough in this gym.”

Negaunee visits West Iron County tonight and Manistique travels to Gwinn Tuesday.
