RAPID RIVER — History happens when you least expect it.

Brimley quarterback Trey Lynn is proof of that with eight touchdown passes, one away from the state record in a Rapid River 74-20 win over Rapid River on Friday.

Lynn threw seven of his eight touchdown passes in the first half.

“My dad was talking to me on the way here about it and said he knew I was capable of it,” Lynn said. “I didn’t even know until after the game that I had broken the record and it feels pretty good to do it with this great group of guys.”

Lynn threw five of his touchdown passes to sophomore wide receiver Gus Vonseggern. “It felt good to be part of it. I’m happy for Trey,” Vonseggern said. “Brimley isn’t really known for being a football school so it was a huge confidence booster for us tonight.”

Vonseggern scored on a 12-yard touchdown catch with 46 seconds into the first quarter to give Brimley an 8-0 lead.

With 7:49 to go in the first quarter Lynn hooked up again with Vonseggern on a 6-yard touchdown pass and Brimley extended their lead to 14-0.

Lynn struck again with 3:26 to go in the first quarter with a 37-yard TD pass to Vonseggern and the Bays led 20-0.

“Trey and Gus have a special connection,” Brimley coach Mason Harris said. “I don’t mean it arrogantly, but I told Gus that he is the best wide receiver in the U.P. with his work ethic as a sophomore in the weight room and on and off the field. He works his tail off every day.”

With Brimley up 28-0 Lynn connected again with Vonseggern on a 9-yard TD pass to put the Bays up 34-0.

With 6:49 to go in the first half Rapid River sophomore Lane Olson connected with freshman Hayden Kee on a 9-yard TD pass to cut the deficit to 34-8.

“We have been working on a new up-tempo offense,” Olson said. “I don’t think they were ready for it and we did a good job of executing on plays.”

With 6:09 to go in the first half Lynn threw a 34-yard TD pass to Vonseggern and the Bays extended the lead to 42-8.

The Rockets found the end zone again with 3:10 to go in the first half on a 8-yard TD run by Olson to cut the deficit to 50-14.

With 3:25 to go in the third quarter Lynn hooked up with Terin Forrester on a 8-yard TD pass to give the Bays a 58-14 lead.

With 6:17 to go in the fourth quarter after Olson left with an injury, Brennen Kee stepped in and threw a 25-yard TD pass to Joseph Thorbahn and the Rockets cut the deficit to 66-20.
