Sports Flashback July 28-Aug. 3
July 28, 1984 — Dave Vandermissen of Wilson became a double-winner, taking the checkered flag in the Class 1 and 2 races in the Upper Peninsula 100 off-road races at Bark River.
Doug Motto of Wilson drove to victory in the Class 2 1600 race. Roger Tournangeau of Wilson took top honors in Class 14 Odyssey. Scott Thompson of Gladstone copped Class 15 Odyssey and Leo Jorasz of Harris won Class 17 ATC.
The Escanaba Little League All-Stars were eliminated from the U.P. tournament, dropping a 12-5 decision to Ontonagon Lake of the Clouds. Eric Braun collected three hits, including a solo home run and Scott Odgers added a solo shot for Esky.
July 30, 1984 — The Escanaba Cubs captured their first U.P. American Legion baseball title in 15 years by edging Marquette 4-3. Paul Mattson led the Cubs with three hits and winning pitcher Marty Fittante gave up nine hits.
Aug. 2, 1984 — Becky Iverson of Gladstone earned the Class A girls’ title at 83 strokes in the U.P. Golf Association’s Junior Championships at Highland Golf Club, 11 strokes better than runner-up Laura Bittner of Highland. Lisa Bittner of Highland was crowned Class C champion with 48 and Trina Beck took the Class D crown at 63.
Aug. 3, 1984 — The Gladstone Girls’ Little League All-Stars took advantage of eight errors in an 8-6 triumph over Lincoln Park in the state softball tournament. Bases-loaded walks to Jennifer Ostlund and Kelly Sachinski in the fourth inning provided Gladstone with its margin of victory.
July 31, 1989 — It was not Gladstone’s day in the American Legion zone tournament as it suffered two losses in the Copper Country. The Indians fell to host Calumet 14-7 and Iron Mountain Green 10-0. Jamie Lyle had three hits in the opener. Terry Randall took the loss in the first game and Marc Nault was tagged with the loss in the nightcap.
Aug. 1, 1989 — Jim Margetta of the Gogebic Country Club in Ironwood captured the Upper Peninsula Golf Association’s Junior title with a 2-under-par 69 at Highland Golf Club. He was followed by Joe Mendelin of Marquette at 73 and Dennis Hruska of Marquette and Brian Robinette of Escanaba with 74.
Aug. 2, 1989 — The New York Mets traded Kevin Tapani of Escanaba to the Minnesota Twins for Cy Young winner Frank Viola. Tapani, who was pitching for the Mets’ Triple A franchise at Tidewater, Va. was assigned to the Twins’ Triple A team at Portland, Ore. in the Pacific Coast League. Tapani finished 7-5 with a 3.47 earned run average at Tidewater. He struck out 63 and walked 25 through 109 innings.
The Gladstone Senior Boys’ Little League All-Stars dropped a 3-2 baseball decision to Taylor Northwest in the state finals. Gladstone, which trailed 2-0, got on the board in the third inning on Doug Sanville’s sacrifice fly and tied the score in the fifth and Sanville’s single.
Reade Hubert collected three hits and clubbed two home runs, leading the Escanaba Hawks in a 19-7 baseball conquest of Manistique in four innings. Lonnie Poupore, Tom Ohman and Steve Crighton added two hits apiece. Tom Selling led Manistique with two.
Gladys Hansen sank the first hole-in-one in her 40-year career, using a 6-iron on the 90-yard, No. 3 hole at the Escanaba Country Club. Karen Wiles fired a 39 in women’s league play, followed by Polly Gregorie with 42.
Gregoire was part of the winning team which included Barb Pfotenhauer, Patti Peterson and Lois Thompson in the pari-mutuel event. Wiles was joined by Sarah Hansen, Naomi Taylor and Jean Chapekis for the runners-up.
