Michigan-Wisconsin Open slated for this weekend
ESCANABA — There’s no doubt the Michigan-Wisconsin Open tennis tournament has withstood the test of time.
Now in its 77th year, the M-W Open begins with singles play Saturday and continues with doubles competition Sunday.
Players should check in at 8 a.m. in Ludington Park.
Matches begin shortly after check-in and will also be played on the high school and Veterans Park courts.
Approximately 75 players were entered as of Tuesday, according to tourney director Tom Penegor.
“One of the positives is we have nine entrants in men’s Class A which is probably the most we’ve had in about 10 years,” he said. “Another positive is we have players from Marquette, Ishpeming, Houghton, Iron River, Menominee, Wallace, Kingsford, Iron Mountain, Niagara, Wis., Elk Rapids, Traverse City, Williamsburg, Gaylord and Illinois. This is the only tennis tournament (of its kind) around.”
Among the entrants is a trio of Escanaba High School graduates.
They include former Lake Superior State University player and coach Luke Ogren, who’s now coaching the women’s team at Western Illinois University. Joining him are former LSSU player Steve Prica and 2023 Upper Peninsula Division 1 singles champ Dawson Williams.
Also looking to contend are former champion Holden Ross and Nolan Anderson, both from Iron River.
Among those entered in Class A doubles are current Kingsford coach Alex Shanks and former Menominee coach John Antilla.
Esky’s Connor Howes, Andrew Lord, Nick Chaillier and Nick Garcia, all of whom are entering their senior year, and recent graduate Jackson Cousineau are also entered.
Coach Penegor says he would like to see more kids come out.
“I would like to see more girls in the tournament, especially with their season just around the corner,” he added. “This would be a good tune-up for them. I also encourage the boys’ players to participate. I just want them to compete and get better. I would like to see fans come out and support these people. They would get to see some good tennis. I appreciate the support of the community, City of Escanaba, the school district, volunteer helpers and Denny Lueneburg for everything he does.”
