Johnson wins Waterfront Marathon

GLADSTONE — Ben Johnson has been running a full marathon each month for well more than a year.

The Minneapolis resident proved no worse for wear here Saturday as he won the MISH Waterfront Marathon by covering the 26.2 mile course in 2:46:29.06 on this sunny, very warm and humid day.

Johnson ran a 2:35 in Grandma’s Marathon at Duluth, Minn. just three weeks ago.

“It was hot,” he said. “I drank as much as I could and ran a conservative race. In fact, I ran the second half faster than the first. The last couple miles in particular were hot, but I still finished strong. Running a marathon each month has kept my endurance up.”

He was followed by Dan Garcia of Clarkston, Mich. at 3:11:14.15 and Josh Granquist of Powers (3:17:24.25).

Michelle Bolini of Houghton was crowned women’s champion at 3:17:48.18. She was followed by Jamie Cooper of Bogart, Ga. (3:38:18.88) and Adaline Bohr of Palm Harbor, Fla. (3:43:09.89).

Kaleb Coston of Burnsville, Minn. dominated the men’s half-marathon (13.1 miles) in 1:22:06.02. He was followed by George Harmon of Ishpeming (1:43:06.03) and Andrew Grosvenor of Fort Wayne, Ind., (1:45:43 2).

“I hung with the leaders as long as I could, then at the turn-around I wanted to pick it up,” Coston said. “I ran smart in the heat and finished strong. This is a beautiful course. It’s well marked. This is one of the most scenic courses I’ve run.”

Melinda Kennedy of Chicago took the women’s title at 1:33:20.79. Christina Dam of Crystal Lake, lll. Was runner-up (1:37:27.27), followed by Daisy Englund of Rock, who completed her first half-marathon in 1:40:43.38.

“It was a warm day,” Kennedy said. “I wanted to be conservative at the start and was able to finish strong. I love races that have great community support. It also helps to know you have a beer waiting for you in the end.”

Kennedy, who’s originally from Nahma, plans to run in the amateur marathon during the Summer Olympic Games in Paris in August.

“This will be the first time they’ll be doing an amateur marathon during the Olympics,” she said. “I’m very excited to be going over there. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Joe Silvernail of Hiram, Ga. took the men’s 10-kilometer event at 39:18.12, followed by Canon Kuntze of Cedar River (42:26.34) and Kaden Malone of Spalding (43:32.72).

Ingrid Hoenke of Marquette paced the women in 47:14.01. She was followed by Kate Kuntze of Cedar River (47:19.17) and Faith Cappaert of Stephenson (49:59.37).

“I just wanted to have a good time and enjoy the nice, sunny day,” Hoenke said. “This is a beautiful course. I’d do it again.”

Temperatures approached 80 toward the end of the event which drew more than 200 runners.
