Ketchum dazzles, Gladstone baseball thwarts Kingsford

GLADSTONE –Baseball can be a fickle sport where one player typically doesn’t take full control of the game.

Keyword there is typically, because Gladstone’s Isaac Ketchum’s play in the batter’s box and on the mound were crucial in the Braves’ 5-2 win over Kingsford Wednesday at Don Olsen Field.

Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, Ketchum came to the plate with the bases loaded. After taking the first two pitches of the at bat for strikes and fouling off the third, the fourth pitch caught his eye.

He cranked it for a line drive to center for a base hit, scoring Cooper Sanville and Gavin Frossard to tie the game at two.

After Trevor Thorbahn went down on strikes against Flivvers’ pitcher Gavin Trevillian, Austin Pepin came up to bat. Ketchum bolted to steal second. Flivvers’ second baseman Jacob Deuter couldn’t bring in the throw, allowing Rex Kelly to safely score from third and give the Braves a 3-2 lead.

From there, Ketchum didn’t allow another hit for the rest of the game. Sanville and Frossard added RBI singles in the fifth for a 5-2 lead.

Ketchum tossed a complete game, allowing tow runs (one earned) off two hits with two walks and four strikeouts and finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and a stolen base.

Sanville finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Kelly finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Casey Alworden finished 1-for-3 with a run scored.
