BR-H track emerges victorious in home invitational
HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris track and field teams doubled their pleasure here Monday, sweeping to victory in both ends of their invitational meet.
BR-H’s girls scored 171 points, followed by Manistique 126 and Stephenson 59.
The BR-H boys finished with 120.5. They were followed by Munising 103 and Manistique edged Rapid River 93-86 for third place.
“It’s probably more than a decade since our boys have won a meet,” BR-H coach Travis Depuydt said. “Both teams are hitting their stride going into the (Division 2) regional. Lot of kids got PRs (personal records). We’re very proud of both teams.”
Senior Julia Olson set the school record in the girls’ 800-meter run in two minutes, 30.2 seconds, topping her previous best (2:30.41) from Friday’s Munising Lions Invitational .
Friday’s effort was more than four seconds faster than Rachel Ouwinga’s best in 1990.
“This is really exciting,” she said. “This is my first time winning it. I got a chance to pace myself with (Lola) Korpi in Munising which I think helped me a lot. As a team, we really had to work hard to pull that one out. We picked it up in the end.”
Olson also helped the Broncos win the 1600 relay (4:28.81) and shared third with junior teammate Marissa Ives in the 200 (27.59) Monday.
Senior Lauren Zawada, who ran the third leg of that relay, took the 100 hurdles in 17.79 seconds and 300s in a personal-best 51.06 on this sunny and mild afternoon.
“I hit a few hurdles today, but I’m proud of my time,” she said. “I’m aiming for better in the regional. This was my first time running in that relay, and my shoelace became untied in the 300s. Although, running at that time definitely gives me a boost.”
Classmate McKenzie Hoffmeyer captured the 100 (13.09), helped the winning 800 relay (1:49.14) and was runner-up in the 200 (26.86) and long jump (15-0) in her final home appearance.
“I had a pretty good day,” she said. “I’ve been under 13 in the 100 and today’s jump (in long jump) wasn’t my best, but I’m still happy with it. I think I was able to build momentum for the regional, although I’ve got to work on some things. This being my last home meet seems kind of weird. Right now I don’t really think about it, but maybe it’ll sink in once we get to the end of this school year. This is a pretty nice day for a track meet. It’s nice and sunny.”
Ives was runner-up in the 100 (13.26) and helped the winning 800 relay (1:49.41).
“Our seniors always step up and compete,” BR-H girls’ coach Jason Lockwood said. “Their work ethic is what separates them from others. Meets at this time of the year are very important. They provide you with great opportunities to tune up for regionals. Manistique has very good athletes. They certainly challenged us in Munising.”
Additional runners-up for the Broncos were junior Hope Varoni in the 800 (2:39.51) and freshmen Emma Zawada in the 300 hurdles (53.29) and Mira Johnson in pole vault (8-0).
The BR-H boys won the 800 (1:39.6) and 3200 relay (9:09.71).
Freshman Ben Knauf, also part of the 3200 relay, placed second in the 1600 (4:55.83).
Also placing second for the Broncos were senior Ethan Ives in the 200 (24.27) junior Wes Knauf in the 3200 (11:34.24), sophomore Matt Marohnic in the 400 (57.4) and freshmen Gionni McDonough in the 110 hurdles (17.07) and Dane Schmitt in long jump (17-5) and their 400 relay (47.42).
Stephenson senior Kayela Putnam won girls’ pole vault with a school-record leap of 9-6 and was runner-up in the 3200 (14:30.41).
“I went to the Green Bay pole vault clinic Saturday which I think helped,” she said. “I’ve been practicing on that a lot. I think this is a real good confidence boost for the (Division 3) regional and my other events went okay.”
Rock Mid Peninsula eighth-grader Lewis Holmes set a junior high record in boys’ high jump while winning at 5-10.
“The warm weather helped and my teammates were there to encourage me,” he said. “I had missed one jump and wanted to go for six feet, but hit the bar on all three jumps. I feel I can take first in the (D-3) regional, especially if it’s a warmer day.”
Manistique senior Wyatt Demers captured the 100 (11.63) and 200 (23.8) and anchored the winning 1600 relay (3:54.09).
Munising junior Dan Goss won the 800 (2:09.74), 1600 (4:49.15) and 3200 (10:53.34) and helped the Mustangs take second in the 3200 relay (9:10.38)
Mustangs’ senior Joe Kelley swept the hurdles, taking the 110s (16.43) and 300 (43.4) and helped the winning 400 relay (46.94).
Rapid River junior Eddie Forslund won discus (117-1½). Classmate Clay Christoff took pole vault (10-0) and freshman Jeb Green copped the 400 (56.86).
Holy Name junior Michael Rexford took long jump (17-9) and placed third in the 800 (2:15.64) and junior Spencer Willa provided Powers North Central with a first in discus (38-11).
In girls’ weight events, Carney-Nadeau junior Mariska Laurila won disc (92-10.5) and senior teammate Samantha Kedsch captured long jump (16-0.5) and Manistique senior Danielle Lund took shot (34-3).
Manistique sophomore Maya Carlson was a double-winner, taking the 1600 (6:01.34) and 3200 (13:29.84) and Big Bay de Noc eighth-grader Destiny Bleau took the 200 (26.5) and placed third in the 100 (13.41).
