Bay College baseball’s Cooper earns weekly honor

ESCANABA — Norse Baseball’s George Cooper (FR, Eltham, Australia) was named MCCAA Northern Conference’s Player of the Week for the week of May 20-28.

Cooper’s week started out with a non-conference matchup against Bryant & Stratton (WI) on Tuesday at Fox Cities Stadium, the home of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. He went two for three and had a booming home run to dead center estimated to travel over 420 feet. He had two RBIs in the game.

With the Norse still in the hunt for the postseason, Cooper helped lead his team to a weekend sweep of Delta College. In the opener he was two for three. His double in the bottom of the fifth picked up two RBI’s and gave Bay a 4-2 lead in a game they won 5-2.

In the nightcap Cooper was one for three from the plate and took the mound as the starting pitcher. He picked up a win giving Bay six strong innings. He scattered five hits, gave up one earned run, walked four, and struck out three as the Norse won 5-1.

On Saturday he picked up another double in a two for four effort. He scored a run as Bay went on to a 9-2 victory.

In the series finale Cooper got the scoring started with a three-run home run to center. Though the game was back-and-forth it was a lead the Norse would never surrender as they went on to a 12-8 win.

For the week Cooper was eight of 17 which is good for a .471 batting average. He had two home runs, two doubles, seven RBIs, and three runs scored.
