Manistique softball drops three in Indian River, earns win over Iron Mountain

INDIAN RIVER–It was a week filled with highs and lows for Manistique softball.

The Emeralds dropped a trio of games on the other side of the bridge on Saturday, but earned a doubleheader split over Iron Mountain for their first win of the season.

Here’s what went down:

Iron Mountain 15, Manistique 9

Thursday’s doubleheader saw the Mountaineers explode with six runs in the bottom of the second for a 7-1 lead. The six-run advantage held for the rest of the game, but the Emeralds didn’t back down without a fight, mustering three runs in the fourth, two runs in the fifth and sixth and one run in the seventh.

Kaylin Morrison finished 4-for-4 and was a home run away from the cycle while also scoring four times, drove in one run and stole a base. Kenna Davis finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, scored once and stole a base.

Alexis McDade and Bella Larsen each had two hits. McDade took the loss in the circle, allowing 15 runs (11 earned) off 17 his with three walks and two strikeouts in six innings.

Manistique 18, Iron Mountain 12

The Emeralds picked up their first win of the season, and never trailed throughout Thursday’s finale.

Manistique did a majority of its damage in the second inning, which featured a two-run double from Keira Frankovich and a three-run double from McDade.

McDade finished 5-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored. She also earned the win in the circle, allowing 12 earned runs off 10 hits with 12 walks and three strikeouts in six innings.

Adele Ranney finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Jade Rahn finished 3-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Aleah Larsen finished with four runs scored and three stolen bases.

East Jordan 6, Manistique 2

The Emeralds tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the first thanks to a RBI triple from Morrison and a RBI single from Davis.

The Red Devils tacked on four runs in the top of the third to seal the win.

McDade took the loss in the circle, allowing six earned runs off seven hits with five walks and six strikeouts in six innings of action.

McDade, Morrison, Davis, Ryleigh Rice and Ava Kusiner each had a base hit for the Emeralds.

Charlevoix 11, Manistique 10

If you like low scoring pitchers duals, this was not the game for you.

The Emeralds fell behind 7-0 after two innings, but they weren’t down for long.

The Emeralds loaded the bases in the top of the third and scratched across three runs thanks to being hit by pitches. Then Rice belted a three-run triple into right field cut the deficit to 7-6.

With the deficit ballooned to 9-6 and down to the last out of the fourth, Davis belted a bases-loaded single. Two runs scored, but Larsen was thrown out while attempting to go from first to third to make the deficit 9-8.

Charlevoix added its 10th run in the bottom of the fourth for a two-run advantage.

The Emeralds got to their last out of the top of the fifth with Rice standing on first. She stole second and was driven in off a Frankovich double. Two pitches later, Kusnier blasted a double to right field, scoring Frankovich to tie the game at 10.

The Rayders walked it off with a double steal of second base and home.

Kusier and Rice finished with two hits each with the latter tallying three RBI. K Davis also finished with three RBI.

McDade allowed 11 runs (eight earned) off 12 hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts in four innings in the circle.

Inland Lakes 23, Manistique 0

Bella LaVigne earned the Emeralds lone hit in the three-inning loss. Manistique committed four errors.
