EBEN JUNCTION — A dominating pitching performance from senior Isaiah Brow led Manistique to its first win of the season and a sweep of Superior Central on Thursday.

The Emeralds won the first game 4-2 and followed it up with a 12-2 win in game two.

Brow was sharp on the mound allowing two runs on two hits with 14 strikeouts and no walks.

“I was throwing strikes,” Brow said. “The slider was working well for me for me, it’s getting through those first three hitters, after that I was cruising.”

The Emeralds put up three runs in the first inning highlighted by a two-run single by sophomore Mack Pugh.

“I have been in a little slump as of late,” Pugh said. “The count was full. I choked up on the bat and hit a little dribbler down the third base line for the RBI and the wild throw led to another run.”

Brow retired the first nine batters in order for the Emeralds before Superior Central senior Trent Rutter reached on an error by the second baseman. Brow sent the next three batters down and had a no-hitter intact after four.

In the fifth inning, Brow struck out the side for the third time and brought the no-hitter into the sixth.

Rutter reached again on error in the sixth inning. Bradley VanDamme singled on line drive to right and senior Blake Walther hit a double into rightfield that scored two to cut the deficit to 4-2. With two outs Jason Kanerva came to the plate and Brow caught him looking at the third strike to end the game. “Isaiah was on today,” Emeralds’ coach Greg Bambach said, “and we were proud of what we got from him today,”

The Emeralds jumped out to an early lead again in game two as Ajay Berger drew a walk. Senior Alex Noble singled on a line drive to center, and Brow drew a walk to load the bases. Junior Cooper Curtis hit a two-run single to give the Emeralds a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Jayce Goudreau hit an RBI groundout for the first out and the Emeralds led 3-0 after one.

The Cougars battled back in the bottom first when Blake Walther singled to bring in a run and the Cougars picked up another run off a wild pitch and the Emeralds lead was cut to 3-2 after one.

The Emeralds broke the game open in the third inning, with the bases loaded senior Ryan McEvers singled to bring in a run and freshman Cooper Graphos later hit a two run single to right and the Emeralds led 7-2 after three.

“I just wanted to get a hit,” Graphos said. “Everyone was telling me to swing. I got a hit, and it felt great.”

The Emeralds added five more runs in fourth to close the game out. McEvers was solid on the mound giving up three runs on two hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

“It wasn’t my best day on the mound, but it also wasn’t my worst,” McEvers said. “The defense behind me was awesome and it was just great for the team to pick up the wins.”

Superior Central will be at Stephenson on Tuesday and Manistique will be at Gladstone on Wednesday.
