Gladstone track and field keeps pace in Purple Power Invitational

MARINETTE — Junior Kacie Tuljus shined on a cloudy and damp evening here Thursday, helping the Gladstone girls earn runner-up honors in the Purple Power Invitational track and field meet.

Kewaunee, Wis. won with 163 points and the Braves edged Green Bay West 138.83-137.5.

Tuljus captured the 100-meter dash in 12.97 seconds and anchored the winning sprint relays.

“I’d say my starts have improved for sure,” she said. “I think experience has helped me a lot. Our relays went really well. I’m really glad we came to this meet. It was nice to get one in before our home meet (Friday’s Gladstone Invite).”

The Kewaunee boys also won at 202, followed by defending champ Gladstone 190 and Marinette 115.5.

Juniors Lauren Sundquist and Lucy DeGroot and freshman Eva Pankonien were also part of the winning girls’ relays.

“Our 400 relay time is about three seconds faster than at our peak last year and our 800 is nearly at the same time we had at the U.P. Finals,” Braves’ coach Jim Murtha said. “Kewaunee is a new addition to this meet. We didn’t know what to expect from them. We had a real nice showing. This was a very competitive girls’ meet for sure.”

Braves’ junior Kristy Karl added a first in the 100 hurdles in a personal-best 17.76, shared first with Green Bay West’s Da’jayah Slaton and Mikiah Rogina in high jump at 4-10 and placed fourth in the 300s (56.04).

Suring’s Bunny Cramer copped the 800 in 2:41.81, followed by Gladstone sophomore Payton Takkunen (2:47.31) and freshman Joselyn Mills (2:52.31).

Kewaunee junior Katie Meier took the 3200 (14:32.2) and was followed by Gladstone sophomore Lexi Gilbert (15:35.7) and senior Kayla Farnes (15:45.02).

In pole vault, GB West’s Adriana Moyano was the winner at 9-0. DeGroot placed second (7-6) and junior Chelsey Demeuse was third (7-0).

Gladstone senior Zoe Gillis was runner-up in shot put (27-4) and tied for third with Marinette’s Jadyn Sherwood in discus (81-1).

“Placing second and third in the pole vault, we’re happy with that,” Murtha said. “We haven’t had much time to practice. The pole vaulters had maybe 4-5 days of practice. It’s tough to practice that indoors. We’re fortunate to have Casey (coach Young) working with them. We’re happy with our 300 hurdles for the first meet. We also did well in high jump. The runway was slippery and we had very little time separation between high jump and hurdles.”

Gladstone senior Kostya Olsen won the boys’ pole vault with a personal-best leap of 12 feet.

Classmate Tanner Howes cruised to victory in the 3200 (10:53.72) and was runner-up to Kewaunee’s Chris Cullen in the 1600 (4:56.59) by nearly 11 seconds.

“I think we ran well for the first meet,” Gladstone boys’ coach Gary Whitmer said. “This was good training for the kids. I’m glad we got this in before our home meet. We had nice performances. Tanner had been training hard and was a little tight, but still ran nice times.”

Senior Luke Bracket provided the Braves with a dominating performance in the 110 hurdles (16.17) and sophomore Mason Peltin took second in the 300s (46.58).

Classmate Nate Young was runner-up on a lean to Marinette sophomore Mason Hofherr in the 100. Young, who was clocked at 11.69 in the 100, helped the Braves place second in the 800 relay.

Gladstone junior Evan Woelffer and freshman Andrew Karl shared second in high jump (5-6), and Woelffer added a third in long jump (18-2).
