Mason’s double-double leads Emeralds to keeping season alive with win over Broncos

MANISTIQUE — A big night from junior Blake Mason propelled Manistique boys basketball to a 60-52 win in district action Monday night.
Mason had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four blocks in the contest.
“It felt amazing to have a game like this,” Mason said. “As long as we do it again on Wednesday we’ll be fine, you know get the other teammates going and give it all we got.”
Mason was hot in the fourth quarter scoring three of the first four baskets in the stanza for the Emeralds. Mason scored the first basket of the fourth quarter on a powerful drive to the basket for the layup. Off a Broncos turnover Graphos threw an outlet pass to a wide open Mason for a layup and the Emeralds led 47-38. Mason finished off an 8-0 run for the Emeralds with his third basket of the quarter to give the Emeralds a 51-38 lead. With 4:15 to go in the fourth quarter Mason drove between two Bronco defenders for a layup to put the Emeralds up 53-40. Mason had eight of his 19 points in the fourth quarter.
“He played really good tonight,” Emeralds coach Cody Kangas said. “He has really came along these last 4-5 games. It’s something we expect from him and that helps us build a winning formula.”
The Broncos ignighted a 10-0 run to start the second half. Sophomore Brayden Derouin drove to the basket for a layup and Broncos senior Ethan Ives hit a left-wing three to cut the Emeralds lead to 36-28. On the Emeralds next possession Ives picked the pocket of the Emeralds and took the ball to the basket for the layup and the lead was cut to six.
The Emeralds threw an ill-advised pass that was stolen away and Derouin pulled up for a 3-pointer that missed but, he was fouled shooting the three and went to line and made all three suddenly the Emeralds lead was cut to 36-33.
On the Emeralds next possession Ives picked the pocket of the Emeralds and took the ball to the basket for the layup and the lead was cut to six.

“They came out of that 1-3-1 zone in the second half and we kind off got a little stagnate,” Kangas said. “We decided to switch up our offense to a 2-3 zone offense and we started getting better looks inside.”Emeralds senior Wyatt Demers halted the Broncos run as he hit a corner three to extend the lead back to six. Mason added a pair of layups in the third quarter for the Emeralds and they led 43-36 after three quarters of play.
Demers added 16 points and seven rebounds and senior Parker Graphos had 14 points and seven assists.
The Broncos were led by Derouin with 23 points.
“We had a lot of opportunities we didn’t take advantage of,” Broncos coach Nicholas Lippens said. “There is no moral awards in tournaments. We had multiple opportunities, we just didn’t capitalize on them.”
Manistique will travel to Iron Mountain for a district semifinal at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
