MARQUETTE — Manistique hockey came out flat in a 8-0 loss to Marquette on Friday night at Lakeview Arena.

“It was a tough night for us,” Manistique coach John Nutkins said. “Anything that could go wrong for us did tonight.”

Marquette waisted no time getting on the board. Senior Caleb Beerman scored a power-play goal 3:02 into the game off assists from senior Adam Heikkila and sophomore Kyle Moyer. Less than a minute later, sophomore Brody Sheldon’s wrist shot found the back of the net thanks to a set up from Heikkila, who was credited for his second of three assists on the night on the goal.

Marquette added goals by sophomore Brody Lemire and senior Tucker Welch for a 4-0 lead after one period.

Marquette senior Caleb Fries scored the first goal of the second period 57 seconds into the frame with Connor Stade earning credit with the assist. Moyer took an assist from sophomore Lucas Belkowski and the puck found the back of the net to put Marquette up 6-0. The lead went to 7-0 on the unassisted goal by Caleb Janofski with 5:21 to go in the period.

Heikkila put the game away with 4:57 left in the third as the lefty put the wrist shot in the back of the net for the 8-0 win. “We did a really good job of executing tonight,” Marquette coach Doug Garrow said.

The one bright spot for the Emeralds tonight was their penalty kill unit only allowing one goal in five power play opportunities for Marquette.

The Emeralds return to action at 7p.m. Tuesday to play host to Negaunee.
