Black Bears win a pair on the island

MACKINAC ISLAND — Some high school athletes spend their Friday night’s playing a game and spending Saturday doing whatever they want to do.

Big Bay de Noc girls basketball played on both Friday and Saturday, but its pair of games weren’t at home.

The Black Bears ventured for road games at Mackinac Island. The Black Bears earned a pair of wins over the Lakers.

Here’s what went down.

Black Bears 34, Lakers 19

After falling behind 9-7 after the first quarter, Big Bay outscored the Lakers 11-6 in the second stanza for an 18-5 lead at the half. The Black Bears continued to keep momentum on their side, opening a 26-19 lead after three quarters and scored the fourth quarter’s lone eight points in the win.

Black Bears 37, Lakers 27

Camryn Pederson erupted with a game-best 14 points in a 10-point win over the Lakers on Saturday to claim the weekend sweep.

Big Bay opened a 15-5 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The Black Bears led 25-13 at the half. Despite being outscored 14-12 in the second half, the hole was too big for the Lakers, giving Big Bay its third win of the season.

Nedeau finished with nine points. Thill added seven points. Durrance scored four points. Payton Pederson earned two points and Harvey earned one.

The Black Bears finished 9-of-34 from the floor, 4-of-14 from 3-point range, 7-of-11 from the free throw line and committed 18 turnovers.

In total, the Black Bears finished the two-game series shooting 32% from the floor, 19% from 3-point range and committed 32 turnovers.

“Our offense was a disappointment. We shot poorly and had way too many turnovers,” Black Bears coach Bob Pederson said. “We need scoring from more than just Ellie and Camryn. On the bright side, our defense was strong and we dominated the boards. Caragan Thill had 25 rebounds and Payton Pederson had 15 for the weekend.

“It’s a fun experience for the kids to play on (Mackinac) Island. Great memories were made.”
