Marquette runners have good day at Esky meet

ESCANABA — It was a good day for Marquette runners at the GNC Conference meet in Escanaba, winning in both the girls and boys divisions.

The boys side had Marquette finish with 114 points, Kingsford had 110 points and Gladstone was third with 94 points. On the girls side it was Marquette with 155 points followed by Escanaba with 97 points and Gladstone was third with 53 points.

Michael Floriano had a good day posting a time of 11.08 seconds in the 100m and 23.32 in the 200m winning both events and winning his two relay events as well.

“It felt really good the wind helped very happy with my times now getting ready for the U.P. Finals next weekend,” Floriano said.

Drew Hughes posted a time of 2:01.31 in the 800 meter run run, setting a new personal record and had a time of 4:28.58 in the 1600 meter run.

“It felt better today than in previous meets, I ran the race strong start to finish the wind helped me out some as well,” Hughes said.

Luke Bracket of Gladstone ran strong in his two hurdle events as he has all season finishing with a time of 16.26 in the 110 hurdles and 42.97 in the 300 hurdles. “It was a great out there I ran good didn’t hit any hurdles had a good wind at my back so happy with the results now on to the finals next weekend,” Bracket said.

Noah Johnson of Kingsford had a great day winning the shot put with a throw of 47’1 and setting a new school record in the discus with a throw of 156’4 which is only three and a half feet shy of the state record. “It feels great to break a record I put in lots of time and practice every day to improve,” Johnson said.

Cora Anderson won the shot put for Marquette with a throw of 32’9 and also won the discus with a throw of 84’2. “It felt really good today I set a new personal record by eight inches in the shot put i’m still working hard and trying to improve and get better but very happy with today’s results,” Anderson said.

Cardel Morton scored two wins on the day in the high jump he finished with a jump of 6’0 and in the long jump posted a jump of 20’2. “It felt good in coming off a knee injury so still kinda getting back where I feel totally comfortable, the Butler kid from Menominee is a great high jumper as well great to have good competition,” Morton said.

Marquette coaches were pleased with results after the meet. “It feels good at the end, we had some scratch events but we played well in events and did a great job of executing today,” said boys coach Derek Marr. “It was a very good day for our athletes lots of personal records and scored points in every event, now we gotta prepare for U.P. Finals net weekend,” said girls coach Natalie Messano.

The U.P. Finals will be in Kingsford on Saturday June 3 starting at 10 a.m. ET.
