ST. NICHOLAS — Landry Koski is about to begin a new chapter in her life.

The Mid Peninsula senior has already electronically signed to attend Purdue Northwest in Indiana where she’ll continue her running career this fall.

“I toured Purdue Northwest a few weeks ago,” Koski said just hours prior to her high school graduation Friday. “It felt like home and decided I wanted to sign. I was looking through e-mails one day and started researching the campus. The e-mail I received was from the assistant cross country coach, and it was just the e-mail that sparked my interest.”

Koski, who also considered Ferris State, plans to major in fitness and recreational management.

“They (Ferris) didn’t offer the major I wanted,” she said. “I liked the idea that Purdue Northwest is still in the GLIAC. It’s still kind of close to home, yet far enough that I won’t be in the U.P. anymore. I just want to see what other opportunities there are outside the U.P. I’m not exactly sure when classes start, but I’ll be moving down there in early August.

“I talked to the (cross country) coach, and the season is supposed to be a little longer than high school. I’m excited I made a decision. I get to start kind of fresh.”

Running at Purdue Northwest gives Koski an opportunity to run against former Wolverines’ teammate Daisy Englund, who’s entering her sophomore year at Ferris.

“It will be all new, but there will still be some familiar people,” said Koski. “Without running with Daisy, I wouldn’t be half the runner I am. Thanks to my mom (Julie) for helping me get to where I am and my sister Cheveney for coaching me. She has always been my toughest coach and always knows what’s best for me whether I like it or not, and without my mom’s help I wouldn’t be where I am now.”

Koski concludes her prep athletic career this week In the Upper Peninsula Division 3 Golf Finals at Highland Golf Club Thursday before competing in Saturday’s U.P. Track Finals at Kingsford.
