Braves boys track wins own invitational meet
GLADSTONE — The Gladstone boys made the most of their lone home appearance this season, winning their own invitational track meet with 179 points here Friday.
They were followed by Ishpeming 129 and Iron Mountain 100.
The Ishpeming girls earned top honors at 135, and Munising squeezed past Gladstone 122 1/2-122 for runner-up honors.
Gladstone senior Jamisyn Bergeron won four events in her final home meet, taking the 100-meter dash in 13.7 seconds, 200-meter dash (28.12), 400 (1:03.37) and long jump at 14 feet, six inches.
“I’m pleased with how the meet went,” she said. “I kind of liked the weather today. I kept my warm-ups on between races. I need to work a little harder in practice. I think this will motivate me.”
Ishpeming sophomore Lola Korpi also collected four firsts, taking the 800 (2:38.46), 1600 (6:01.42), 3200 (13:15.17) and anchoring the winning 3200 relay.
“That was my goal for today,” said Korpi. “I wanted to get as many points as I could for our team. I’m not real happy with my 1600 and 3200. We haven’t been on our track yet. The conditioning isn’t there. It was important to just get this meet in. We don’t have another meet until May 5 (at Kingsford).”
Ishpeming coach Trisha Smith was happy with the team’s performance.
“Lola had a good day,” she said. “This is a good starting point for her. We also had a few surprised. Some of the freshmen stepped up. It’s a struggle right now because we haven’t been able to get on the track.”
Gladstone senior Emily Siebert won pole vault (8-6), and freshman Kristy Karl provided a first in the 100 hurdles (19.21).
“Kristy came out of the slower heat to win that race,” said Braves coach Jim Murtha. “This is a big confidence builder for her. We didn’t have our full team here, but we had a lot of good performances. Jamisyn had four real good performances, and Emily and Lucy (DeGroot) going 1-2 in pole vault was huge. I think Emily and Lucy are going to go 1-2 in a lot of meets.”
Gladstone junior Drew Hughes captured the boys’ 1600 (4:52.27) and 3200 (11:02.01).
“Today was a good day,” he said. “I feel good about how it ended. I stayed relaxed and made it a good workout. I feel good about the 1600. The weather was nice for running. I’m very happy with the way everything went.”
Senior Brett Boudreau copped discus (122-8) and was runner-up to Ishpeming’s Brayden Martin by an inch in shot put (37-6).
Gladstone senior Sasha Olsen added a first in high jump (5-10). Sophomore Nick Matthews took the 300 hurdles (47.18), and freshman Aaron Hughes won the 800 (2:19.89).
The top three teams in the 400 relay were separated by .06 seconds, with Gladstone edging Munising on a lean and Iron Mountain taking third.
Munising junior twins Micaiah and Josiah Peramaki combined for three firsts, with Micaiah winning the 100 (11.76) and 200 (23.54) and Josiah taking pole vault (12-0).
Iron Mountain posted firsts in the 800 and 3200 relays.
“We have a real strong team this year,” said Mountaineers coach Karen Ellis. “The boys have filled the gaps in the field events a little better this year, and we had two senior girls out today. Our senior (girls’) hurdler went down with a knee injury in soccer practice last (Thursday) night, and we lost some points there. Overall, we did a decent job in the field events.”
Freshman Joe Carlson got Holy Name on the board with a fifth-place finish in the 3200 (11:58.03).
