Bark River girls fall in season opener
ISHPEMING — The Bark River-Harris girls basketball team traveled to Ishpeming Tuesday and fell to the Hematites 62-39 in their season opener.
“We had a bit of a stinker to start the season,” Broncos coach Matt Richer said. “We started 4-0. Then, they went on a 23-0 run. It was 23-5 at the end of the first quarter. Turnovers, sloppy play and not rebounding — they’re simple things and things we can correct.”
Bark River found itself on the back foot due to the pressure of Ishpeming’s press.
“Their press really gave us a lot of trouble,” Richer said. “From the opening tip, it just gave us a lot of trouble. They’re a quality team, and we had trouble getting into our offensive sets.”
After matching the Hematites’ output in the second quarter, the Broncos were within 13 in the third but couldn’t close the gap.
“We had a chance,” Richer said. “We cut (our deficit) to 13 in the third quarter. We were just trying to chip away, but then we had a couple bad turnovers. It was pretty much over by then.
“(This was) a learning game for us,” Richer said.
The Broncos host Forest Park Thursday.
