MARQUETTE — Escanaba’s Bayside Soccer Club clinched the 2021 Division 2 U.P. Soccer Championship in Marquette last weekend.

Bayside and Marquette JV faced off in the defensive title match, both teams keeping the other out of the net, which ended in a shootout.

With each team receiving five penalty shots, Bayside led 3-2 after the fourth shot and Matt Nelson of Gladstone buried his penalty shot.

Bayside’s fifth and final shot bounced off the crossbar, but Bayside goalie Luke RIce of Crystal Falls made his third save in the shootout to secure the win.

Starting off the shootout, Bayside’s Caleb Basso sank his shot, but Marquette followed up with one of their own. Quinn Nelson made Bayside’s next, and Marquette kept pace.

Both teams’ next shots were saved by their respective goalies.

To reach the title match, Bayside defeated Negaunee, 4-0. Bayside’s Caleb Basso started the match with momentum with a goal during the first play. Cole Crowe, Quinn Nelson and another goal from Basso earned Bayside the win.
