Gladstone minors knocked out of tourney by Norway

NORWAY — A 14-run scoring barrage, and a combined no-hitter by a trio of pitchers, powered Norway past Gladstone — 14-0 in five innings — Monday afternoon in Michigan District 10 9-10-year-old All-Stars District play at Marion Park in Norway.

Starting pitcher Colton Lord, Hunter Langin and Tristan Lessor combined for the Norway no-hitter. The trio combined to fan a dozen batters, with Langin striking out five of the seven batters he faced.

“Tonight was a great team effort,” said Norway head coach Scott Sternhagen. “We swung the bats well and got on base, producing runs. Our pitchers did great, and Hunter Langin pitched unbelievable.”

Norway jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top half of the opening inning with Lord and catcher Landon DeBakker each driving in a run.

Tucker Buchanan smashed a pitch to deep left field over the Gladstone left fielder’s head, and Buchanan raced all the way around the bases for an inside-the-park home run in the top half of the third.

Lord followed that up with a triple and scored on a ground out by DeBakker.

Norway added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning, as Dylan Erickson cracked an RBI triple and scored two batters later on Buchanan’s RBI single.

After Buchanan stole second base, Lord had an RBI base knock of his own, scoring the speedy Buchanan.

Norway put the game away in the top half of the fifth as Brock Vanginkel blasted an RBI triple. Three batters later, Buchanan added a third RBI in the game on a double.

Lord and DeBakker each added RBI singles in the top of the fifth as well for Norway.

The loss for Gladstone ended their tournament run and their season.

“We haven’t seen any pitchers in our league that throw at that speed like the three did tonight,” said Gladstone head coach Amber Quigley. “It was new to our boys, and it was intimidating to them. I am proud of them because this was a level of competition that they haven’t seen before.”

Norway will face Escanaba this evening at 5:30 p.m. in a win-or-go-home game.

Both teams have one loss, with the winner moving on to Wednesday’s championship game versus Kingsford.

“Everyone did the job they had to do today, contributing to the win both on offense and defense,” Sternhagen added.
