Eichhorn takes second

BROOKFIELD, Wis. — Hunter Eichhorn of Carney tied for second in the 120th Wisconsin Golf Association state amateur tournament here Thursday at Westmoor Country Club.

Eichhorn had a final-round best score of 66 to zoom into a tie for runner-up with Alan Miller of Nekoosa at 5-over-par 285. Piercen Hunt, a redshirt freshman on the University of Illinois golf team, won the title with 1-under-279.

Hunt was a two-time former WIAA state high school champion at Hartland Arrowhead High School.

Eichhorn won the state amateur in 2019, which made him exempt from qualifying for the state amateur. Eichhorn, who will be a senior on the Marquette University golf team in 2021-22 and is a two-time Big East Conference player of the year, put himself in an early hole by shooting 72-76-71 before the final round.

Eichhorn won the 2018 Upper Peninsula Golf Association men’s championship at Norway Oak Crest Golf Club and won four U.P. high school titles at Carney-Nadeau.

He had a record low total 267 in Norway in 2018 and tied the 18-hole total of 64. Eichhorn, then 19, finished 13 strokes ahead of two-time former UPGA champion Mark Clements of Ishpeming.
