ESCANABA — Escanaba seniors Nicole Kamin, Bryant Maki and Brody Bevins all received athletic honors last week during Escanaba’s graduation week.
Kamin and Maki were both named recipients of the Pfotenhauer/Gessner award, while Kamin and Bevins received the honor of the Gary Abrahamson Senior Athletic Award.
The Gessner Award has been handed out since 1924 with the Pfotenhauer name being added in 1992. Herman Gessner was an Escanaba businessman, while brothers Bob, Don and Merle were heavily involved in athletics at Escanaba.
The Gary Abrahamson Senior Award is given to the male and female senior athlete earning the most varsity athletic letters with a minimum grade point average of 3.0.
In her final year as an Escanaba Eskymo, Kamin competed in volleyball, basketball and softball.
Kamin — and her basketball teammates — reached the state quarterfinals this year. The first time ever for an Escanaba girls team.
On top of breaking 1,000 career points and becoming the leading scorer in Escanaba history, Kamin was named Ms. U.P. Basketball, Player of the Year and to the All-U.P. Dream Team (by the UPSSA), earned Great Northern Conference Player of the Year and was named to the Division 2 All-State First Team.
In her last regular-season home at-bat, Kamin hit a home run to finish up her time on the softball team in Escanaba.
Kamin will be taking her basketball talents to Grand Valley State University next year.
Maki — who played football, basketball and baseball this year — earned GNC All-Conference honors for football.
For football, he was also named to the Division 4 Detroit Free Press All-State first team following his junior season.
Like Kamin and the girls’ team, Maki and the boys’ Eskymos made it to the state quarterfinals this year. The first time since 1961.
At the Eskymos’ basketball banquet, Maki was named teammate of the year.
Next year, Maki will hit the gridiron at Michigan Technological University.
Bevins has had his hands in multiple sports as well, competing in track cross country and wrestling.
