Esky ends trip at 3-2

CANTON — The Escanaba Eskymos softball team took a trek downstate to play a total of five games in Canton at the Michigan Challenge Saturday and Sunday.

They ended the weekend 3-2 with wins against Schoolcraft (6-0) and L’Anse Creuse North (11-5) Saturday and Plymouth (11-3) Sunday.

Escanaba’s lost against Allen Park (3-0) Saturday and Howell (4-0) Sunday.

“Overall on the weekend, this has been the best we’ve played in all aspects of the game,” said Escanaba coach Andy Fields. “We are locking in at the right time.”

In the final contest of the trip — against Plymouth — the Eskymos hit four home runs with Carsyn Segorski, Carley McInerny, Maddy Monkevich and Erica Moore each hitting a dinger.

For McInerny and Monkevich, it was their first career varsity home runs.

McKayla Mott started the game and pitched three innings. She had two strikeouts and allowed three hits.

Emily Moore finished the game and had two strikeouts and allowed one walk and three hits for three earned runs.

Emily Moore also pitched the entire weekend opener for the Eskymos against Schoolcraft and had a shutout in that effort with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Mott threw game two against the seventh-ranked Division 1 Allen Park team. She had seven strikeouts, had three walks, and allowed six hits for three earned runs.

Against L’Anse Creuse North, the Eskymos were able to get everyone — all 17 players that made the trip — into the game. Fileds said the 11-5 victory was a “total team win.”

Issy Braun got her first career varsity hit in the game with a shot that drove in two runs.

In the Howell (third-ranked Division 1) game, Erica Moore (three SO, one BB, four allowed hits for four runs — two earned) and Mott (one SO, two allowed hits) split duties on the mound, again.

“They (Howell) are a very talented team,” said Fileds. “Again, we got an exceptional performance out of both our pitchers but couldn’t get anything going offensively.”

Among some of the standouts for cumulative stats from the five games were Segorski with seven hits, seven RBIs and two home runs, Carney Salo with six hits and three RBIs, and Erica Moore with six hits and four RBIs.

“It’s been a challenging schedule for the girls, but they have gotten through the meat of it and we are getting better as the season goes,” Fields said. “We look to do big things coming down the stretch.”

The Eskymos continue their season today with a trip north to Marquette to play the Redmen.
