Broncos top Kingsford
HARRIS — A big fifth-inning propelled the Bark River-Harris Broncos (3-0) to a 7-3 win over the Kingsford Flivvers Tuesday afternoon in Harris.
The victory comes after a sweep against the Manistique Emeralds Saturday.
The trio of wins are the first three games for Bark River since 2019.
“Just being able to play is good enough,” said Broncos coach Al Botwright. “It’s obviously early yet, but can’t ask for much more than (starting undefeated).”
Heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Broncos led a tight game 1-0.
With Travis Mack (walked) and Nick Javurek (infield ground single) on base, Zach Robinette stepped up to the plate.
Zach Robinette hit a line-drive double to center field, bringing Mack and Javurek into score and stretching the Broncos lead to 3-0. He would steal third, then make it home to score as Aiden Johnson grounded out.
The last two runs in the inning came from Johnny Robinette — who scored from second on a Tyler Racicot bomb to right field — and Carter Zawacki on a passed ball.
“We got ourselves into good hitters counts, and we maximized those opportunities either taking walks or good swings on pitches,” said Botwright. “We strung together a good number of at-bats to push in some runs.”
He added that solid baserunning helped to break the game open.
The final Bark River run came in the sixth from Mack as he rounded third to make it 7-0 off a Javurek line-drive double to left field.
Despite leading 7-0, the Broncos weren’t out of the danger zone yet in the top of the seventh as the Flivvers loaded the bases with zero outs.
“The seventh inning was very dicey,” Botwright said. “Aiden (Johnson) had been pitching very very, well but seemed he was starting to labor. I debated taking him out, but he had been pitching so well for so long, I figured it was his game to win or lose. He pulled it out.
“(He) did a fantastic job coming in to finish out that game. He pitched the last five innings. Just by a matter of principle, I couldn’t take him out. He did a fantastic job as a long reliever.”
Zach Robinette started the game on the mound for BR-H. On top of two strikeouts, he ended up on base twice — scoring both times — and had two RBIs.
Botwright also noted Nick Javurek’s performance at shortstop as ‘outstanding.’ He had two hits and one RBI.
The Broncos head to Iron Mountain to take on the Mountaineers Thursday.
