Hannahville boys, girls split
HANNAHVILLE — A reversal of fortune worked in Hannahville’s favor here Saturday morning in a 53-42 boys’ basketball triumph over Kinross Maplewood Baptist.
The victory enabled the Soaring Eagles to gain a split in the Northern Lights League weekend series.
Maplewood rallied past the Soaring Eagles 62-44 Friday night, overcoming an early 22-6 deficit.
Hannahville trailed 27-18 at halftime of Saturday’s contest but trimmed its deficit to 33-32 on a 21-foot jump shot by junior Gage Sagataw late in the third quarter.
Senior Joe Larson gave Hannahville a 35-33 lead on a 21-foot set shot from the left wing 25 seconds into the fourth, and Mason Thunder added another for a 37-33 advantage with 6:35 remaining.
A lay-in by senior Micah Bailey brought Maplewood within 37-35 at 5:13.
Hannahville responded with an 8-0 run, gaining a 45-35 cushion on a steal and layup by Thunder.
The Soaring Eagles didn’t allow Maplewood to get within eight points through the remainder of the contest.
Sagataw, who drained five 3-point hosts, led Hannahville with 18 points. Larson added 14, and eighth-grader Deshawn Metzger had 10.
“We hit nine 3-point shots, which is part of our game, and Deshawn really stepped up,” said Hannahville coach Josh Eagle. “Dominic (Bonnee) scored 26 points on us last night, and we wanted to take away his penetration. They’re well-coached and very disciplined.
“We tried to get into their passing lanes knowing, if we did that, we’d give ourselves a chance.”
Bailey, who joined the 1,000-point club Friday, scored 24 points in both games.
“All the glory to God,” he said. “It’s an awesome feeling to achieve that. Last night, we had a rough first half but adjusted well in the second half. We took the lead at the end of the third quarter and didn’t look back. We didn’t practice all week due to Covid. Lot of my friends came over to watch, and I really wanted to get the 23 points I needed.”
Hannahville took a 16-14 lead on Sagataw’s jumper from the left corner 30 seconds into the second stanza.
The Black Bears then scored the next six points, taking a 22-16 lead on a layup by Bailey.
“They outhustled us in the second half,” said Black Bears’ coach Steve May. “Although, this was still a good weekend. Micah is a great asset to our program and fun to coach. They played good fundamental basketball and broke us down defensive in the second half.”
The teams combined for 45 turnovers, including 25 by the Black Bears.
Hannahville (5-3 overall, 3-2 NLL) visits North Central tonight. Maplewood (7-2, 5-1 league) is on Mackinac Island today.

The Soaring Eagles were within 17-14 following seventh-grader Janessa Platt’s jump shot from the lane with 2:50 left in the second quarter.
Maplewood then finished with second with a 9-0 run for a 26-14 halftime advantage.
“I was proud of the effort, but their run before the half was the turning point,” said Hannahville coach Michelle Carne. “This was a big improvement from last night (in Friday’s 59-20 loss). Janessa had a nice game. She’s a go-getter. We’re still young and inexperienced. We just need to take care of the basketball. Their press hurt us. We’ll go back to the drawing board and work on it in practice.”
