Eskymos grapplers take district title

Todd Rose | Daily Press The Escanaba wrestling team poses with their trophy after defeating Marquette in a Division 2 district title match at Escanaba.

ESCANABA — It didn’t take long for the Escanaba wrestlers to take care of business here Wednesday night as they needed just 35 minutes to post a 64-11 triumph over the Marquette Redmen in a Division 2 team district final.

The victory sends the Eskymos to the team regional March 24 at Fremont where they will likely open against Gaylord.

Prior to that, Esky and Marquette will travel to Bay City John Glenn for Saturday’s individual district.

“That was a short one, but we’ll take it,” said Esky coach Jeff Wright. “Marquette is going to put up a fight every chance they get. Gaylord is tough, but we’ll go down there and give it our best shot.”

Senior Brodey Bevins got the Eskymos started, pinning Zach Sigal 75 seconds into the 152-pound match.

Jaxson Vizineau (160) pinned Brody Caster at 2:39, and Kahler Geyer (171) pinned Parker Kroll in 2:55, giving the Eskymos an 18-0 lead.

“It’s definitely important to start a match off right,” said Bevins. “I just wanted to get ready for this weekend. It’s always nice to get a few matches in before going downstate. It will be different with no spectators, but we just have to be ready to go and represent everybody at home.

“Gaylord will be a good challenge for us in the team regional. I’m looking forward to wrestling them.”

Esky took four of the next five bouts on forfeits before Trevor DeGrand (125), Adam Reimer (130) and Collin Arnt (135) pinned their opponents in 30 seconds or less for a 60-6 advantage.

Marquette’s Wyatt Kuhlman (140) then defeated Brock Viau on a technical fall (17-1) in four minutes.

“Wyatt is a state qualifier from last year,” said Marquette coach Tony Gentz. “He has been wrestling well. We have no seniors on this team. Hopefully, today’s result won’t deter anyone. We’re just going to have to work hard and get better. We’ll practice the next two days and hopefully be ready to go on Saturday. If we wrestle to our capabilities, we could get 3-4 guys into the regional.”

Esky senior Tyler Lawson (145) concluded the meet by taking an 11-3 victory over Luke Mead.

“Luke is a good wrestler,” said Wright. “That was a good win for Tyler. I think this meet got us into the competitive spirit for this weekend. You’ve got to really earn it to qualify for the state tournament. We were led by our seniors. This is a real good group of kids coming through. I don’t want to see them go.”
