Broncos rout Cougars

HARRIS — Everybody got to play and nearly everybody scored for the fourth-ranked Bark River-Harris boys here Thursday night in a 64-24 basketball rout of Superior Central.

The Broncos scored the first 14 points in this Skyline Central Conference contest before senior guard Parker Maki got the Cougars on the board with a pair of free throws with 6.6 seconds left in the first quarter.

BR-H then began the second stanza with an 11-0 run, gaining a 25-2 advantage on a short jump shot and free throw by senior center Trenton Wood-Keshick.

The Broncos continued to extend their lead which reached 37-7 on a layup by junior Anthony Miley in the closing moments of the second frame.

“This was a nice win,” said BR-H coach Marc Zawacki. “Give our team defense credit. This week, we held both teams under 25 points, which was a real solid effort.”

BR-H senior forward Joey Stein led off the third quarter with a five-foot jumper, set up on a pass from senior guard Carter Zawacki.

Stein scored 13 points and Wood-Keshich added 10 for the Broncos, who led 52-15 after the third frame.

Only two players scored for Superior Central. Maki, who hit all seven of his free throws, led with 16 points. The Cougars committed 10 turnovers.

“We can’t ask for more than that,” said Cougars’ coach Adam Ely. “We can never say our guys aren’t working hard. But if your shots aren’t going in, it snowballs in a hurry. Parker can score from anywhere. He’s our 20-point scorer, and even he missed a lot tonight. Physically, the game got out of control, and it never came back. They’re a good team. They’re undefeated for a reason. They pass the ball well, which I think is the most impressive part of their game.”

The Broncos had just miscues.

“We took good care of the ball,” said coach Zawacki. “Right now, we’re just trying to clean up on some things. We have some defensive things we need to work on and go from there. The kids put a lot of time in, and it shows.”

BR-H, which also won the jayvee game 45-22, hosts Norway Monday. The Cougars host fourth-ranked Munising tonight.
