Broncos top Trojans

HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris Broncos will have momentum on their side heading into districts after beating the Forest Park Trojans 3-0 (25-7, 25-14, 27-25) Thursday night in Harris.

The Broncos took the first set thanks in part to two lengthy runs. A six-point run led by Cara Zawacki took the team from eight points to 13. The other, an eight-point run helmed by Allison Richer, clinched the set for the Broncos.

Carley Varoni started the second set for the Broncos with a short run that included two aces.

Varoni totaled five aces for the night, leading the Broncos in that category.

Forest Park’s Elaina Perry helmed the Trojans for a run of their own to tie things up at five. The Broncos mounted several more short runs through the remainder of the set to take the win.

The third set began with back and forth action that saw the Trojans and Broncos trade jabs with the Broncos holding a slight advantage until the score was 13-10. Then the Trojans started scoring. They evened it up at 13, then 14, and 15.

Enter Forest Parks’ Maddie Divine. With Divine serving, the Trojans went on a six-point run to take their first lead of the night at 15-21. The Broncos mounted a charge to tie the set at 24 thanks to a four-point run led by Richer. Despite a short serve from Richer that made the score 25-all, the Broncos took the win 27-25.

“It was really close, but it was good to see the girls can pull back and go back to basics if needed,” said Broncos coach Jennifer Ives. “Our first two games we played really strong, so the third we wanted to mix it up … try some different things. Heading into districts, we just wanted to try things out.”

With several impressive Broncos tonight, one that stuck out to Ives was Morgan Cappaert.

“She hasn’t played volleyball since seventh grade, and she came in the game and made some really key plays,” said Ives. “She had a key block, and then, she had a key kill in the third game.”

Forest Park coach Bobbie Jo Anderson put the loss down to two things, mistakes and a lack of game-time.

“We started off pretty slow in the first and second sets,” said Anderson. “Really, we were just beating ourselves. We weren’t making them fight.”

Bark River drew a first round bye, and they travel to Menominee on Wednesday for second round play.
