Esky girls shut out by Wykons

STAMBAUGH — The Escanaba girls tennis team had a rough day away from home Monday as they were shut out by the West Iron County Wykons 8-0.

None of the matches went to three sets, but the Eskymos had the most luck in doubles. At No. 4 doubles, Esky’s Lizzy Sliva and Lily Newhouse pushed the Wykons’ Kalie Keranen and Laci Moffatt to 6-4 in both sets but couldn’t push beyond.

With No. 3 doubles, the Wykons’ duo Claire Giles and Allison Korpi had a little easier time against the Eskymos’ Delaney McIntyre and Leslie Purcell and took both sets 6-3.

In the remaining doubles, Erica Moore and Madi Mishica fell against the Wykons’ Ellie Miller and Natalie Prophet, 6-1, 6-3, and West Iron’s Avery Mariuzza and Emily Nelson earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gracie Wickham and Abby Hill.

For singles, Esky’s Jacey Moreau fell to Jenna Weaton 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1, and the Wykons’ Jillian Koski took control of No. 2 after a tougher first set to earn a win over Sophia Derkos, 6-4, 6-2.

No. 3’s Ukiah Penegor fell to West Iron’s Lindsay Williams, 6-0, 6-0, and Mallory Leeve finished the sweep for the Wykons by defeating Amanda Beem, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.
