Braves JV win over Redmen

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Braves JVs opened its season with a 12-0 win over the Marquette Redmen. The Braves, a combined freshman and sophomore team, played a Redmen team that only lost a few games last year.

Freshmen Nate Young had a record night in his first high school game, rushing for 271 yards and scoring the Braves first touchdown on a 66-yard run — avoiding Redmen along the way — to give them a 6-0 lead late in the opening quarter.

Midway through the second, Gladstone sat at midfield after a 17-yard punt return from Elliot Vitito. Braves quarterback Braden Sundquist then went to the air, hitting Young for 16 yards. On a third and nine play, Sundquist hit a streaking Rex Kelly down the sidelines for a TD pass to put the Braves up 12-0.

Two 70-yard punts by Brave halfback Vinny Howes and an interception by Kaden Gibbs kept the Redmen out of the endzone at the half.

The second half was all defense as the Braves held Marquette scoreless with punts from Howes and big defensive plays by Eli Berthaume, Young, Howes, Vitito Caleb Meyer, Mitch Cartwright and Jeff Fryczynski to seal the victory for the young team.
