Channing takes control in Superiorland baseball

MARQUETTE — The Channing Railroaders defeated the Escanaba Polecats 5-2 in Channing on Wednesday to clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Superiorland Baseball League playoffs.

The Railroaders remained undefeated at 3-0 as Escanaba suffered its first loss and slipped to 2-1.

The Marquette County Mavericks improved to 2-1 after Channing won 5-2 on July 27 in Channing.

Coldwell Banker-Craig Heinonen is 1-2 and play at Channing in the first round of the playoffs on Monday, while the Mavs and Escanaba will face each other in Gwinn.

In Channing’s win over the Mavericks, Jacob Adriano went five innings for MCM with Steve Hintsala finishing off the game in the sixth, while the Railroaders’ Tyler Miller went all seven innings.

The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Channing got all of its runs despite just one RBI hit as a walk, error on a sacrifice bunt, stolen base, ground out, sacrifice fly and two walks produced the other runs.

MCM got two back in the top of the seventh as Hintsala and Spencer Larson reached on singles and teammates Brad Jalonen and Jake Spear brought them home with singles of their own.
