Cubs’ losing streak reaches five games

MARQUETTE — The Escanaba Cubs saw their losing streak reach five games as they dropped a pair of games at Marquette Wednesday night in the Upper Peninsula Under-19 Baseball League, 8-5 and 5-2.

Collin Arnt absorbed the loss for the Cubs in the opener, as the Blues jumped ahead 5-0 after the first inning. Arnt also went 3 for 4 at the plate, while Grant LaMarche and Nick Kolich each went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Clayton Smith earned the win for the Blues (12-1), helping his own cause by blasting a solo home run to make it 6-4 in the third. Jake Peterson added two hits for Marquette.

Connor Aiken took the loss for the Cubs in the nightcap over four innings. Trent Lawson had a base hit and drove in the Cubs only two runs, but he was forced to leave the game when the throw to second struck him below the eye on his slide. Arnt had Esky’s only other hit.

Hogan Nemetz earned the win for the Blues, who drew nine walks but only had one hit by Peterson in the third. Nemetz only walked three Cubs batters.

The Cubs (5-6) host Sheboygan, Wis. tonight at 7.
