Eskymo senior athletes honored

Ethan Silverstone

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Eskymos recently awarded Gabi Salo and Ethan Silverstone with the Pfotenhauer-Gessner Award as the top senior athletes in the school’s honors program. The award, which is voted on by the coaches, is based on athletics, academics and character.

Salo was a pitching standout on the softball team that won back-to-back Division 2 state titles, winning four varsity letters there. She was named the Total Softball Michigan High School Softball Player of the Year Award in 2019, and recently received the Gatorade Michigan Softball Player of the Year Award. She also collected two letters from the bowling team.

Silverstone led the football team (three letters) from the quarterback position and was an essential part of the hockey team (four letters). He led the football team to a 7-3 season last fall and was selected to the All-U.P. first team offense. On the ice, he was selected to the Division 2 all-state team by the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association despite playing his last 15 games with a sprained wrist.

Madison Block and Grant LaMarche were also awarded the Abrahamson Award. The Escanaba Abrahamson Athletic Award is given to the graduating male and female who have earned the most varsity athletic letters in their high school career.

Block participated in softball (four letters), gymnastics (three) and volleyball (two). LaMarche participated in baseball (four), hockey (three) and football (two).
