Four local players earn D-2 honorable mention
ESCANABA — Four local boys basketball players were named to the Division 2 Associated Press All-State honorable mention list — two from Escanaba and two from Gladstone. Peyton Fedell and Carter Hudson were selected from the Eskymos, while Cam Ballard and Rane Castor were selected from the Braves.
Fedell, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, averaged 17.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 assists while shooting 52% from the field. He was an All-U.P. Division 1-3 first team pick and a Great Northern Conference first team selection.
Hudson, a 6-7 junior center, averaged 14.6 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.5 blocks while shooting 48% from the field. He was a GNC second team selection.
Ballard, a 6-1 junior guard, averaged 15.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting 52% from the field. He scored over 20 points eight times and was a GNC first team pick as well as an All-U.P. second team selection and a Mid-Peninsula Conference second team pick.
Castor, a 6-2 junior forward, averaged 15.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 53% from the field. Like Ballard, Castor was also a GNC first team pick, an All-U.P. second team selection and an M-PC second team pick.
Houghton’s Brad Simonsen was named to the All-State first team after averaging 32.1 points per game this season for the Gremlins. He was also named to the All-U.P. Dream Team.
Benton Harbor’s Carlos ‘Scooby’ Johnson was named player of the year.
