Nine area wrestlers qualify for state competition
ESCANABA — Nine area wrestlers extended their season by placing in individual regional meets Saturday.
Escanaba’s Hunter Larson took second in a Division 2 tournament in Gaylord after dropping a 4-1 decision to Holly’s Nate Young in a 140-pound championship bout. Colin Arnt (125) also qualified by taking fourth.
Gladstone’s Michael Brazeau was crowned 103 champion after winning by technical fall (18-0) over Grayling’s Joe Armstrong in a D-3 tourney at Boyne City.
Cole Hansen (152) placed third and Lane Matzke (112) and Hunter Solis (119) were fourth.
At Charlevoix, Bark River-Harris’s Drew Allgeyer (145) captured the D-4 title by taking a 5-0 decision from Hart’s Jerry Brandel.
BR-H’s Avry Corrigan (103) took third and Manistique’s Isaac Brewster (285) was fourth.
The area grapplers will be among 24 from the Upper Peninsula heading to the state tournament March 6-7 at Ford Field in Detroit.
