C-N girls top BR-H for 12th straight win

CARNEY — The Carney-Nadeau girls displayed a potent 1-2 scoring punch here Thursday night in a 67-47 basketball victory over the Bark River-Harris Broncos.

Senior Sandra Boulton hit 23 points and sophomore Tessa Wagner collected 20 points and 20 rebounds for the Wolves, who ran their winning streak to 12 games.

“That’s a good night’s work for Tessa and Sandra is real solid,” said C-N coach Ken Linder. “I thought Haley Ernest also had a nice game. She’s rounding into shape for us.”

Ernest added 13 points and six steals for the Wolves, who improved to 14-3 overall and 12-3 in the Skyline Central Conference.

BR-H took its only lead at 5-4 on a 21-foot jump shot from the right wing by junior Allison Richer.

The Wolves responded with 15 unanswered points, gaining a 20-5 cushion on a five-foot jumper by senior Zoey Poupore with 25 seconds left in the opening frame.

Boulton then scored 12 points in the second stanza, helping the Wolves extend their lead to 37-18 at halftime.

“We couldn’t rebound the ball and Sandra took over in the second quarter,” said BR-H coach Matt Richer. “We just came out flat. They were beating us to the 50/50 balls, then we’d play good defense and they’d score on us. Tessa is a hard match-up for us. We don’t see too many players who can take the ball to the hole the way she does. Our best lineup is a small lineup, but then we couldn’t match up with them inside. We tried to go size against them and that didn’t work either. It was a frustrating game for us.”

The Wolves led 51-32 after the third quarter. The Broncos (7-9 overall, 6-8 SCC) then started the fourth with a 7-0 run, trimming their deficit to 51-39 on a putback by sophomore Aspen Fredrick.

Following a timeout, C-N answered with a 9-2 run and gained an insurmountable 60-41 advantage on a layup by Ernest with three minutes, 56 seconds left to play.

“We got off to a good, fast start,” said Linder. “You should be able to win the game when you get a first quarter like that. The girls executed the game plan to a tee.

“When they took the timeout, we told the girls to answer right back. We got them out of their press early, then they came back with it in the fourth quarter and it kind of surprised us. They’re a good team. They can shoot the 3 and get steals off their press. They never quit.”

Senior Sierra Debelak scored 12 points for the Broncos, who committed 15 turnovers. The Wolves finished with 13.

“We weren’t getting as many good looks at the basket as we’re used to,” said coach Richer. “They played a good man-to-man and their big girls can take care of the ball in traffic. Maybe we lost our momentum when we called the timeout after our run, but the girls needed a break.”

The Wolves, who won the JV game 36-21, visit North Central Saturday. BR-H hosts the Jets Monday.
