Broncos cruise past Jets on Senior Night

HARRIS — Well, that’s one way to go out on Senior Night.

The Bark River-Harris girls basketball team saved its best home game for last, jumping out to a 26-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and 42-8 lead at halftime on its way to a dominating 60-33 win over rival North Central Monday night.

The Broncos forced 16 turnovers in the first half, constantly picking off passes or swiping the ball out of the Jets’ hands and turning it into easy points on the other end. They started the game on a 22-1 run, capped by a 3-pointer from the left wing by senior guard Sierra Debelak. Their lead swelled to as large as 31-3 on a mid-range jumper by Morgan Cappaert with 7:08 left in the second quarter.

“We’ve actually played like that in stretches this year,” BR-H coach Matt Richer said. “For me being the coach, we (haven’t played like that) enough, but a couple games ago we had a 27-point quarter. (If) we share the ball, we use all five girls that are on the floor, and we play defense together the way we did in that first half and first quarter especially, it can definitely happen more often.”

Leading 42-8 at the half, the Broncos scored the first six points in the third quarter of the Skyline Central Conference contest to take their largest lead at 48-8, allowing everyone to get in the game and the ability to celebrate their four seniors more fully.

Debelak led all scorers with 15 points. Senior guard Riley Arndt added 11, senior forward Makena Lockwood grabbed 10 rebounds, and senior guard Grace Peterson contributed seven steals and five boards. Junior guard Allison Richer chipped in 14 points and four assists.

“All the seniors played good, that was the fun part about it,” coach Richer said. “They played good and they played a lot. You never know with it being Senior Night. You never know how the emotions are going to get into the game, but they held themselves together and they gave me a heck of an effort. I’m proud of the girls.”

The Jets (11-8, 11-7 SC), missing several key players yet again, continued to play hard and scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to make the score look more respectable. Alex Neville led the way 13 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Bree Arsenault poured in 12 points.

“They never give up, that’s one thing they always do,” Jets coach Lee Vincent said. “They never give up, they play hard right until the end. We wanted to hit at least 30 points. I’m proud of the girls. They played hard.”

Coach Richer talked about what the seniors have meant to the program.

“With me jumping in for my first year this year, you don’t know what to expect,” he said. “They’ve had a few different coaches over the years, but every single day I appreciate the seniors working hard for me. They come to practice… For having four girls, they’ve combined to miss one practice in three and a half months. They’ve made it to all the offseason open gyms and stuff like that. They’re definitely going to be missed. They’re fun and great girls to coach.”

The Broncos shot 24 for 57 from the field and held a 25-16 rebounding advantage. The Jets were 11 for 34 and committed 26 turnovers.

BR-H (11-8, 10-5 SC), which also won the JV game 49-36, visits Forest Park Thursday. The Jets visit Mid Peninsula Thursday.
